After Anne Frank

After Anne Frank an award winning 90 minute solo show "March. 1973. Dear diary, I borrowed THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK from the library today, but I can’t bring myself to open it."

And so begins 32 years of Carol Lempert ducking Anne’s legacy, but something keeps pulling her back. Again and again and again. A poignant yet funny true story about the theatre, life, identity, family, and forgiveness.

Many thanks to Thrive Global & Authority Magazine for their interest in my work. Check out their fascinating series: 5 Things I Learned From the Social Isolation of Covid-19 Pandemic. One question they asked was: Please give us your favorite “Life Lesson Quote”? Can you share how that was relevant to you during the pandemic?

My answer was this: My life lesson quote is from The Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank. There is a very moving passage from the book which stays with me: “The best remedy for those who are afraid, lonely or unhappy is to go outside, somewhere where they can be quite alone with the heavens, nature, and God.”

The passage is extraordinary. You see, Anne and her family and friends couldn’t go outside. They were in hiding. Eight people. For two years. In a 450 square foot attic. Afraid that every breath they took, every move they made would alert the outside world to their whereabouts.

During this past year I’ve thought of that quote — and of the Frank family — often. Especially whenever I leave my house and go outside for a walk to clear my head. To survive this pandemic all I have to do is wear a mask and stay 6 feet away from other people. It’s not even a tenth of what others who have come before me have had to do.

Love Doesn’t Rely on Proximity. The fourth thing I’d say has to do with relationships. The people who care about me have shown up in both big and small ways. This year I got handwritten holiday cards from dozens of friends and family. I haven’t received that much mail for Christmas and Hanukka...

The United Nations General Assembly designated today, January 27—the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau—as International Holocaust Remembrance Day. This year's theme for many congregations is: Be the light in the darkness.

The theme puts me in mind of Leonard Cohen's Anthem:

Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack, a crack in everything
That’s how the light gets in

Today is a day to forget your perfect offering. Do one small action—however awkward or un-perfect—to make your world better.

(And if you are the praying sort, don't forget to say kaddish.)

A large part of this show is a tribute to my Uncle, who was a Holocaust Survivor and immigrant to the US. He passed away last night. 5 months from turning 90. Please donate now to the ACLU or Doctors Without Borders or The International Refugee Assistance Project or any other group you like that will do the hard work needed at this time. I just did. For my Uncle—and yours. https://action.aclu.org/secure/donate-to-aclu

If Anne Frank had survived, she would have been 87 today. And sadly, with the events of Orlando last night, she may still be thinking what she once wrote in her diary: "I live in a crazy time."

For my Playwright friends. A request for submissions from Theatre Ariel: "We wants to find a great Jewish laugh for a young comic actress (20's - early 30's) or young comic couple - same age range. Salon Ariel performances feature rehearsed readings in the intimate setting of private homes. The casts are all professionals and we pay royalties to our playwrights. www.TheatreAriel.org."

Theatre Ariel is a Philadelphia based non-profit theatre company that focuses on highlighting works from Jewish dramatic literature to highlight areas of the family, home, community, history and life. The plays may have Jewish themes but the messages are universal.

In After Anne Frank I posit this question: "Who really does own Anne Frank?" John Degen writes eloquently on the current debate about Anne's Diary and copyright in this article for Quill and Quire. (Disclosure: I'm mentioned.)

Recently, The New York Times published a short article detailing what really should be a non-story: an additional time-limited term of copyright protection for The Diary of Anne Frank (known in some editions as The Diary of a Young Girl) is being asserted by the Anne Frank Fonds, the Swiss foundatio…
