Did you know that the song "I Left My Heart in San Francisco", made famous by the late Tony Bennett, wasn't written in the city by the bay but rather in Brooklyn? It was written in 1953 by songwriters George Cory and Douglas Cross, both of whom were living in Brooklyn Heights but were nostalgic for their native San Francisco. They pitched the song to several artists, but nothing clicked until they persuaded Tony Bennett to include it in his nightclub act in 1961. The overwhelming audience response led Bennett to record it, and the rest is history.

Happy 98th Birthday to the Cyclone roller coaster in Coney Island which opened on June 26, 1927! 🎂 It's one of the oldest wooden coasters in the country, and it still operates! The ride starts with an 85 foot rise to the top. After that, it's all gravity as it drops at a 60 degree angle and picks up speeds of up to 68 mph along the 2,640 feet of track. And it’s over in a minute and 58 seconds! It became a NYC Landmark in 1988. So, who’s been on it? 🙂

The diet soda industry generates about $5 billion in annual sales, but did you know that diet soda was invented in Brooklyn? Credit goes to Kirsch Beverages, Inc. which was located in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn. Hyman Kirsch had been selling sodas for decades when he noticed the need for sugar-free, non-alcoholic drinks for diabetic patients. Along with his son Morris, they created a formula which was marketed for its calorie-free aspect. In 1952, they began selling the first diet soda commercially. It was a ginger ale flavor that was soon followed by other flavors. They had a memorable ad campaign that included the Brooklyn sounding slogan, “We Ain’t Got No Sugar.” 😆
