What to watch about Russia:
Catherine the Great - a mini series by HBO played by extraordinarily talented Helen Mirren.
If you think of it Catherine the Great was a female empress of the German origin on the Russian throne which she got as a result of the takeover by murdering her husband - a lawful heir, also German by the way. Quite incredible story to begin with.
When we read the history books we basically rely on dry facts. From them we know that she was a very strong and powerful monarch of her times ruling 34 years. But the stability sometimes seemed very fragile. In fact all her life was about keeping the power and proving its legitimacy. She, being both the human rights defender at the beginning and the founder of absolutism later on had to use all her wits to balance between the interest groups smartly using them against one another.
In the movie you can surely learn about most of her political achievements, but this movie is largely devoted to her great personality. She was a true patriot of Russia. She learned Russian though spoke it with a heavy accent. She was also an outstanding person in terms of her promiscuous sexual relations which for some reason looks very natural on screen and not shocking at all. She is shown as a dedicated and passionate ruler, hungry for power yet ready to concede and feeling in need of support of someone stronger than her, which I don’t agree 100% with the producers of the show. Helen Mirren is amazing in all kind of roles she played, and this one in particular, she had a royal stamina.
What to pay attention at:
1. Natural settings at the palaces outside St. Pete: Catherine’s palace, Pavlovsk and Peterhof park and the fountains (then visit them).
2. Lavish decorations and costumes. Next time you are in Moscow Kremlin take a look at her multiple dresses and see how they changed.
3. Learn some Russian words to surprise your friends. The characters always repeat them.
4. And simply gaze at the pictures of the mini series as are made with great taste.
