The Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary in Nakitoma, Uganda is the only place to see White Rhinos in Uganda. It is one of the most successful re-introduction and conservation programs that exist. It was established in 2008 with just 4 rhinos, the population has grown to over 40 by 2024 and continues to grow. We got up close to two different Rhino families as we trekked by foot. One family consisted of a mother and the youngest baby (4 months old) in Uganda! The baby was so curious that it kept coming closer to us and our ranger made us hide behind a tree. This was truly a once in a lifetime experience!

We trekked for several hours in uneven terrain in the mountains of the to find our Katwe Gorilla family. Trackers left early in the morning to locate our family and then make sure that they were accessible to us. The family members that we were able to photograph consisted of a Silverback male, his mate and their 18 month old toddler. Watching these magnificent animals, with whom we share 98% of our DNA was extraordinary to say the least. Because of this we were all masked when with them to protect the gorillas from catching any illness from us. I was no more than 5 feet from them. More to come in subsequent posts.

One of the many experiences from my recent trip to Uganda was getting to see this amazing dinosaur in person — needless to say, this Shoebill was a . We got to view this bird fish and catch a catfish (or two) in the Mabamba Swamp. Swipe to see it stretch its 6 ft wingspan, make a few silly faces and eventually fly off.
