Happy… Independence Day?
The more I study history, the more questions I have.
Independence from who?
Whose independence?
Because from where I’m standing, it wasn’t everybody’s.
The people who declared independence were seeking freedom from British rule. At the very same time, Indigenous nations were losing their homelands, enslaved Africans remained enslaved, and countless people had no voice in the new nation being created.
So every July 4th, I don’t just celebrate.
I pause.
I question.
I read.
I learn.
History becomes a lot more interesting when we stop asking, “What happened?” and start asking, “Who got to tell the story?”
Just something to think about.
History rewards the curious.
