Gagnon Architecture

Gagnon Architecture We believe people deserve inspiring and enduring places. Consider for a moment the differences between buildings and places.

Our purpose is to design for a sense of place through building solutions that are elegant, expressive, simple, and refined. Buildings surround us with the things we own. They are the physical shelters that keep us safe and comfortable. Places carry a sense of purpose and location. They are embodied with spirit and exist because of the people who contribute to that spirit. Places are where we share

experiences, develop relationships, and feel a common sense of pride. At maurice gagnon architects, we believe people deserve inspiring and enduring places. We are dedicated to creating places which are tailored for the people who use them and to the land that surrounds them. We look to nature to inform our solutions. How a building is situated, how it touches the ground, and how it fits into its surroundings are influenced by wind direction, views, the path of the sun, and the lay of the land. By taking advantage of natural resources, we are able to create buildings that use less energy, have abundant natural light, and are open to nature. We try to understand what makes a particular location special, and with the influence of our clients, we develop buildings embedded with both history and personal touch. Our devotion to craftsmanship is expressed through carefully considered details and natural materials. We embrace the use of cutting-edge construction technologies that enable us to create authentic places that are efficient and practical to build.

We recently submitted a proposal for a new 60,000 square foot state-of-the-art library for Hollister, CA. Intended to be a net-positive energy building, the design promotes natural ventilation, natural light, and natural materials, and is able to produce more energy than it consumes. Special thanks to Altanova Energy+Sustainability, an excellent sustainability consultant in NYC, and to UPHEALING, LLC for biophilic design consulting.

This is our newest proposal for a residential building in the Tribeca neighborhood in Manhattan. Each floor is a separate apartment. Seemingly carved from a solid block of stone, the arches are different sizes based on the rooms they serve.

Here are some preliminary images a proposed family compound on the west coast of Costa Rica. Its designed so that each part can be built over time as separate "cottages". All are connected by porches which create a private courtyard.

Our latest efforts have been focused on a summer home on Great Bay in New Hampshire. We are proposing to use the entire roof to collect solar energy and will capture rainwater for re-use. The house centers around four courtyards, each with a different purpose. All on one floor, the home will be easier for people of multiple generations to use, and visually will be less disruptive to the natural landscape.
