“Music does not exist in and of itself;
it comes into being every time it is performed.”
(Sergiu Celibidache, June 28, 1912 – August 14, 1996).

Today we remember and honor Mr.
tinyurl.com/celibidachi
- conductor, composer, and professor -
the most original and uncompromising conductor in music history.

Here are three quotes by the great conductor:
~ Truth cannot be explained; it must be lived and experienced.
~ Uniqueness is sustained only by spontaneity.
~ Communication cannot be ‘manufactured.’ Either it exists, or it doesn’t …

Throughout his life, Mr. Celibidache was deeply attached to Romania—his homeland—and to ,
the city where he spent the first 20 years of his life.

Don't miss The Yellow Tie - a movie about the remarkable life and art of the most acclaimed Romanian artist of all time.

This week’s pics: rooms with a view.
Located in the heart of the Mountains,
the Radisson Blu Hotel Sinaia Cota 1400
is one of the most luxurious hotels in the Carpathian Mountains.
On most overcast days, the hotel remains above the clouds, and guests experience dramatic views of the valley mist and clouds.

Happy 80th birthday, Mr. !
You have brought many years of enthusiasm and laughter to the world of tennis.

"Tennis would need a Nastase every generation" (sports journalist Rino Tommas).

No player in history has been more gifted or more fascinating than Ilie Năstase, the "original bad boy of tennis", known both for the magic he worked with his racket and for his controversial behavior.
He was an unrivaled entertainer, amusing spectators with his antics and facial expressions, but also infuriating them with his clumsiness and outbursts.
"Despite his volatile temperament, Năstase could do anything, and when he was focused, he became an artist who created with great originality and style," the ATP website says of Năstase.
A showman par excellence, Mr. Nice'n'Nasty revolutionized tennis with the aplomb of a true rock star.

Throughout his career, Ilie Năstase won 87 singles titles and 55 doubles titles. He won the Masters Tournament four times, in 1971, 1972, 1973, and 1975; the U.S. Open in 1972 and 1975; the French Open in 1970 and 1973; and Wimbledon in 1973.
He was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1991.

In 2024, the documentary film “Nasty” - the life of the legendary Ilie Năstase, the first rebel in tennis history - was released.

Open House at the National Bank of Romania
On Thursday, April 23, and Friday, April 24,
from 11 am until 7 pm (6 pm last admission)
visitors are welcome to the 136-year-old Palace of Romania’s National Bank - one of the most architecturally, culturally, and historically significant sites of Romania’s capital city.
This free, annual event offers exclusive access to spaces not usually open to the public: the Board of Trustees' Room, the Governor's Historic Office, and more, and tells the history of Romania’s leading financial institution.
No registration is necessary; a valid ID is, however, required.
Those unable to attend the 2026 Open House can always explore Romania’s National Bank Museum; free guided tours are offered, by appointment only, on working days tinyurl.com/4jyv9zsm

Brancusi Makes the Modern World Look Stale.. we still haven’t matched the sculptor’s grace, humor,
and clear-eyed brilliance.
More than a hundred years ago, though,
he perfected a kind of earthy sleekness
that still looks embarrassingly contemporary,
so fresh that it makes the actual present taste stale.
A Brancusi has the tranquillity of a crescent moon.
His sculptures can’t be caught,
only waved to as they soar grinningly by.
They are gracious but better than you, whoever you are.
(Jackson Arn, "The Perfectionist", June 3, 2024 issue of The New Yorker magazine).
