Our visits took us from the medieval world of The Met Cloisters to the Frick Collection, exploring along the way New York’s constantly changing relationship between museums, private collections and contemporary art.

The Reflection of Bronze

Giuseppe Penone is one of the most important and fascinating artists of 20th-century Italian art, and a founding figure of the Arte Povera movement in the late 1960s. For decades he worked with trees — trunks, bark, growth rings — exploring the boundary between art and nature, between the living and the inert. In this exhibition at Gagosian Chelsea, his first project with the gallery in New York, he turns to bronze: a permanent, eternal material — creating sculptures that preserve the imprint of wood within metal. The idea is simple and profound: nature leaves its fingerprint forever.

June 9 | Fifth Avenue, between 82nd–110th Streets | 6–9 PM

Once a year, Fifth Avenue closes to traffic and hundreds of thousands of people walk between New York's great museums — with free admission, street performances, and an atmosphere that's almost magical. This is our favorite event in the whole city. Save the date.

Museums open for free that evening: The Met, the Guggenheim, Cooper Hewitt, Neue Galerie, The Jewish Museum, Museum of the City of New York, El Museo del Barrio, and The Africa Center. No registration, no tickets — just show up.
