What is the EES?

A new EU border system that digitally records travel in/out of the Schengen Area.

This system will replace passport stamps and will automatically track the 90-in-180-day rule.

Travellers will need to register their fingerprints and a photo at their first entry in the Schengen Area.

What do you need to be aware of:

On first arrival in the Schengen Area, after 12th October 2025: provide fingerprints and a photo at border kiosks.

On later trips (within 3 years): only a fingerprint or photo may be required.

No cost, no online form, no advance action needed.

Please be reminded:

To allow extra time at ports/airports during the first months of operation - queues are likely.

Ireland and Cyprus are not in Schengen, so they are not affected.

Overstaying beyond 90 days in 180 could lead to penalties - EES will make enforcement easier.

PLEASE READ FOR ANYONE TRAVELLING TO THE USA! 🇺🇸

🔔 Heads-up: Important update on U.S. travel costs!

Starting 30 September 2025, the ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) fee for travelers under the Visa Waiver Program will increase from US $21 to US $40. 

If you submit your ESTA application before 30 September, you’ll still be charged the current $21 rate — so it’s a good idea to get ahead of it. 

Also, for travelers requiring a nonimmigrant visa (not using ESTA), a new “visa integrity fee” of $250 will apply starting from October 1, 2025. 

Lucky we got ours in before we travel in a few weeks.
