From Lincoln Park around, up and down the Arts and Education District and then back to YOGI FEST for a day of yoga, high energy fitness, meditation, live arts, healthy vendors, food and UPLIFTMENT.

In the heart of downtown Newark, “Shadow of a Face,” also known as the Harriet Tubman Monument, stands as a powerful tribute to resilience, courage, and community. Designed by architect Nina Cooke John, the monument highlights Tubman’s deep connection to Newark and her role in the Underground Railroad.

Tubman led freedom seekers to Newark’s First Presbyterian Church, a vital stop on their journey to liberation. In 2023, her legacy became a permanent part of the city’s fabric through this interactive monument, which features historical facts, community-designed tiles, and an illuminated North Star.

More than just a statue, this monument is an immersive experience—inviting visitors to walk within it, touch Tubman’s face, and personally connect with her extraordinary journey.

✨ George Washington: Attended services at Trinity Church on Broad Street during his visits.

✨ Abraham Lincoln: His funeral train passed through Newark, and his legacy lives on with the Seated Lincoln statue at Essex County Courthouse.

✨ John F. Kennedy: Spoke on Columbus Day 1962, honoring Italian-American contributions. Visit his bust at Military Park.

✨ George H.W. Bush: Visited Newark 11 times as a candidate and President.

✨ Bill Clinton: Spoke at Malcolm X Shabazz High School and attended a fundraiser at NJPAC.

✨ Barack Obama visited The Robert Treat to show support for then, democratic candidate, Governor Murphy.
