Women of Proverbs The Book of Proverbs is a book of Wisdom and Knowledge and Understanding. I wanted a place to share what I glean from it along with other scriptures.

We have to read the whole Bible and not just pick and choose what we like and ignore what we don’t. When we have read the whole, we come to understand that God is a God of love. He is a jealous God. He is an avenging God. He is also a compassionate God and there are even a few moments when His mind has been changed.

As we realize who He is, it should help us make right choices. We should come to the realization that with our freewill choice, the best choice is the plan of the Word. What is the plan? Some may have never grasped the fact that they are loved and cherished by one who gave everything they have so that they would say yes to being a part of the biggest family in all creation.

Some parts of the Word we will agree with and some we may struggle with. The ones we struggle with; we need to pray for revelation knowledge about. Not just dismiss them because we don’t like them. Revelation knowledge of the Word gives us the ability to love like Jesus did, have compassion and forgiveness for others that has no explanation than that we truly are His followers. Zechariah 13

It’s not about piling up silver like dust or gold like mire in the streets. It’s about our heart motive on why we are doing these things. David was a man after Gods own heart and yet he made some whopper bad decisions. However, he also was quick to ask for forgiveness and do steps necessary in the hope of changing Gods mind.

God puts things into the Word to show us what is coming, good and bad. We then have the choice, choice of freewill, on how we are going to respond to this information. Are we going to take it to heart and make heart changes so that the good portion is what we walk in, or are we going to ignore the information like we know it all and we’ve got this?

The Word has many examples of those who choose either way. The results of choosing good and the consequences of choosing bad. It’s our choice. He is not going to twist our arm to make us choose the way of righteousness. He wants our free choice of following Him. A choice of loving His ways, no matter what it looks like, feels like, or even smells like. His way is the way. Zechariah 9

When you train a child, do you only tell them once how to do something? When you train an employee, does the trainer only tell them once how to do something? So why is it when people read the Word, they close the book and put it on a shelf, calling themselves good? Hmm. I have wondered the same thing. Why do I bring this up? Repetition causes remembrance. What should we remember?

The Word of God, if nothing else. Take today for example. It says, “These are the things which you should do: speak the truth to one another; judge with truth and judgment for peace in your gates. Also let none of you devise evil in your heart against another, and do not love perjury; for all these are what I hate, declares the Lord.”

Our actions show who we love, or not. It says you can tell a person by their fruit. Our fruit needs to at least be speaking the truth, judging with truth, not our opinion. We should not be devising evil for anyone. Our hearts need to be focused on the source of love, the one who gave all because of love. Do we love like that? If not, I think we need to pull the book back off the shelf and get to studying. Zechariah 8

Did you know there is a way to obtain favor of the Lord? The Word gives us the answer in Zechariah 7. “Dispense true justice and practice kindness and compassion each to his brother; and do not oppress the widow or the orphan, the stranger or the poor; and do not devise evil in your hearts against one another.” This describes the way a Believer should live his life.

We are to give out justice. As we practice compassion and kindness, we are to be wise and know when to dispense these and when to hold them when someone is trying to walk in entitlement or manipulation. A true Believer should not allow others to walk all over their kindness and generosity. Jesus let no one walk all over Him.

He was kind, compassionate and yet at times, He had to be stern. He had to bring correction. He desires that all men would walk in love, forgiveness and compassion. A self-centered heart is seeking only to fulfill selfish desires. This will not achieve the favor of God. In fact, it says in verse 12, it brought great wrath. I don’t know about you, but I want favor operating in my life. So I know what needs to be done. Zechariah 7

When you plan a move from one house to another, one city to another, one state to another, or even one nation to another, wisdom says to study about where you are moving to. You learn the layout of the home so you can plan where furniture goes and who gets what room and the purpose for each room. You learn the rules of the area.

We have a final destination that we need to be learning about. Hopefully each person reading this devotional has made a heart choice to make heaven and His Kingdom your final home. If not, now is as good a time as any. We need to be studying about the Kingdom, learning about our future home and how to acquire the resources of there, to use here.

Each chapter we study, gives us more and more information about our final destination. We know there is a mansion built for us. We know there is no anger, or bitterness, or unforgiveness there. We learn that what we get accomplished here is part of our assignment there. Did you know you have an assignment in both places? These are things we learn as we plan our time here as we study the Bible. Zechariah 6

“Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit, says the Lord of hosts.” This may just be one line to some, but to others, it is an open door for mighty miracles and wonders. When I sit and think on this line, possibilities become possible. What do I mean by this? There was a moment in mine and Doug’s life where God deposited into our spirits that which He wants us to do.

As the ministry was downloaded, in the natural, it seemed impossible to accomplish. We didn’t know where to begin. Then, we allowed the Lord to get involved. Divine appointments and connections started to happen. We had to become sensitive to the voice of the Lord. As we follow His leadings, blessings come and things happen. We walk in abundance.

When we miss it, we end up doing it in our own strength. This phrase reminds me that I am not to be doing what I do in my own might and power. I am to rest in His voice, follow what He says and the ministry becomes the easiest thing we have ever done. If we are struggling with a dream given to us, we need to rethink whose might and power are we doing it through and change course if needed. Zechariah 4

Joshua was a man after Gods heart. Zechariah shares with us a vision he saw that included Joshua. As I read today’ chapter, I asked myself, “what is the most important verse of this chapter?” It was the verse that has the statement, “See, I have taken your iniquity away from you and will clothe you with festal robes.” He was standing before the angel of the Lord in filthy rags.

Our sin is like filthy rags before the Lord. I am reminded of the goodness of God. When we stand before the Lord and we say yes to following Him, He removes all those filthy rags and replaces them with robes of righteousness. Then, it’s up to us to walk a life seeing ourselves clothed in righteousness and in the power of our future, walking in His authority.

The enemy satan comes to stand beside us and accuse us of all those filthy rags, BUT, he forgot that we have switched from one kingdom to the Kingdom of the most High. We now have the authority to say to him, “The Lord rebuke you!” We have the Word as our example. We need to remember, those rags aren’t ours anymore and to rebuke the enemy for trying to bring them to remembrance. Zechariah 3

Everyone wants the favor of God, however, not everyone wants to take the steps necessary to walk in the favor of God. God wanted to pour out His favor on Jerusalem. There were some things that needed to be done in order for that favor to take place. One thing was that they needed to flee from the land of the North.

They were asked to escape from living with the daughter of Babylon. I believe these two destinations involved people, places and things. Too many times we are spending way too much time in the wrong environments, around people who corrupt good morals and using our resources to fund things that have nothing to do with building the Kingdom.

What is our daily focus on? Is it singing for joy, for the King is coming, and wants to dwell in our midst, or are we filling our minds and eyes with songs and things that bring no glory to God at all? We need to turn our focus on the Kingdom and flee from those things that pull on our natural hearts. Kingdom living is not hard when we have the right focus and that focus brings with it favor. Zechariah 2

God has all creation that He can use for His purposes, yet He chooses us to be the ones to proclaim. He could use angels, but we are the ones He wants to proclaim. What does He want proclaimed? Well, in Zechariah’ day, He needed him to proclaim, “Thus says the Lord of hosts, I am exceedingly jealous for Jerusalem and Zion.”

What else needed to be proclaimed? “Thus says the Lord of hosts, My cities will again overflow with prosperity, and the Lord will again comfort Zion and again choose Jerusalem.” Zechariah was a prophet in a time when things weren’t going so well for the Israelites. They had wandered from the Lord and His teachings, bringing destruction upon the nation. It was time for them to get back up.

What does this have to do with us? This is Old Testament. Man divided the book into old and new. It is all to flow together. To teach us how God desires for us to live and to proclaim and declare His Kingdom over our lives. His Word is to be proclaimed from the rooftops to the dirt in our lives. We are to be walking in prosperity, so that all will see and have a desire for the Kingdom as well. Zechariah 1

Every time I read the Word, I am reminded of things I had forgotten. Sometimes it doesn’t take much of the scripture for it to come alive and have you thinking on other scriptures. If we all would take more time to focus on what His Word says, the more we would experience His presence and experience His great love. His love causes us to have compassion.

His love causes us to become bold for righteousness. His love stirs within us mercy for others. The more we experience His love, the more we want others to experience that love. The more it causes us to find ways to share that love. Love causes us to walk in forgiveness and brings with it a desire to not want to hurt the Lord.

Righteousness fills us to obedience. The Word no longer is a burden to read and study, it actually becomes a hunger to want to spend more time in it. To understand it and grasp everything it has for us. It also helps us to avoid the dangers that come for those who choose to harden their hearts through unforgiveness and bitterness. We need to choose the path of love. Always. Malachi 4

In the last book of the old testament, the Lord, has shown us how to walk in overflow, protection and have the knowing that we will be remembered in “the day”. Do you want to know how this is made possible? I remind myself of it often. The answer is in tithes and offerings. Some don’t like those two words and if you look at their life, they don’t have these rewards.

It says, “bring the whole tithe”. Not a partial. Not the leftovers, if there is any. But, our best! Off the top. I have watched God multiply small resources to feed a family of six because of this covenant. He says, “test Me now in this.” I can’t count on my hands how many victories we have had in moments that in the natural were supposed to overtake us and take us out.

Then it says that those who fear the Lord will be written down in a book of remembrance. I like to be remembered. I didn’t know the blessing of being remembered until I came to the Lord. It is heartwarming to know that someone is thinking of you. Remembering you, and preparing a place of provision and protection because you are following His instructions. Malachi 3

There are some who say the Old Testament is not for today. I disagree. The Old Testament is rich with wisdom on the way we should live. We are not held down by law anymore because of Jesus' sacrifice, however, knowing what pleases God and makes Him mad is important to know. When you love someone, you want to learn what brings division, and you want to know what brings peace.

If things aren't bringing peace in your life or love, we have to check our roots and heart motive. Where do we look for that? It's not TikTok, or Instagram, or YouTube, or any other social media. Those are filled with opinions of broken natural man. They are a good source of knowledge when used properly. However, true knowledge comes from the Word of God.

The israelites in Malachi's days had knowledge on what they were doing, but they didn't have the wisdom of God on why. Instead of bringing their best and walking with a heart of love and compassion, it was done by pure obligation. I don't want to go through life as a mom, wife, friend, or teacher out of obligation. I want everything I do to be done with the heart of love. Malachi 2.

As Believers, there are things required of us, just like with the Israelites. They were expected to bring sacrifices and offerings to the Lord. However, in a time that they had made some bad mistakes, they were taken from their homeland. They were eventually returned and the temple was rebuilt. Not to its former glory and the customs of the people had been forgotten.

As the customs were restored, the process of the people was different. Different in respects to their hearts were not in the right place. Instead of honoring God with their best, they were bringing to Him, the blind, the lame, the sick, the broken and expecting God to honor their sacrifices. He asked them, “would you offer this to your governor and expect him to honor it?”

He would not honor it. How about us? Where is our heart motive when we bring things to God? Are we offering Him our first and best? Or, are we bringing to Him the leftovers? He couldn’t honor that which the Israelites placed on the altar back then, because of their heart motives. When we bring that kind to Him, He can’t honor ours. We have to change our hearts and the motives on why we reach out to Him. Malachi 1

I just realized that chapter 30 of Proverbs was written by Agur, who was talking to his friends. May we all have a friend like Agur. We need to be a friend like Agur. What am I talking about? Well, if we are a true friend we will want to encourage our friends, as well as, warn them when they might be making wrong choices. Agur has a good way of putting things into words.

He asks his friends, “who has ascended into heaven and descended? Who has gathered the wind in His fists? Who has wrapped the waters in His garment? Who has established all the ends of the earth? What is His name or His son’s name? Surely you know!” Apparently, they must have been saying some things like they were something special and God was lesser.

Agur goes on to say, “do not add to His words or He will reprove you, and you will be proved a liar.” It seems to me that it would be better for us if we heeded the words of a good friend, who loves us, verses going down a road to destruction, leading to God correcting us. This is why it’s so important, crucial even, to have the right people to hang out with. Proverbs 30

For me, when I study the book of Proverbs, I have a choice to make. Am I going to focus on the good or the bad? I choose to read it all, allowing the good to show me how I am to be. It teaches me how to respond to evil. I learn to study the real deal so when the false comes my way, I can immediately identify the source.

I learn that increase comes to those who rejoice. I learn that I need to rejoice in all situations, the good, the bad, the ugly, and in the most exciting times in my life. I learn that when I love wisdom, I make my Father in heaven glad. I learn things like, “the righteous sings and rejoices. The righteous is concerned for the rights of the poor.”

The more I study, the more I learn how to respond to people who are hurting, angry, walking in unforgiveness. I learn that the more I put love inside, the more I walk in love to others, the more love will come out. The more love that comes out, the more the Lord highlights people to me to share His love with. His love produces doors for people to be set free. I choose to walk in love. Proverbs 29

At the beginning of every year. I on purpose read through the book of Proverbs. Did you know that there are 31 chapters of Proverbs? At different times during the year, I will go to Proverbs for that particular day and read the chapter that goes with the number of that day. Why? Why do I do this every year? For wisdom.

You can never have enough wisdom. We can never remind ourselves enough times about where we need to make course corrections. Airplane pilots have to have correct coordinates to get to their destination safely and on time. If they are off by 1°, they can end up thousands of miles away from the correct destination. It only takes one little degree of being off correctly.

It's the same with our spiritual compass. People who end up with failure in their lives, especially as a Believer, didn't get there all at once. It happened gradually. Maybe it started by missing a day of morning devotions. Maybe it started because they changed jobs without seeking the Lord's best and it got them too busy for God. Staying in the Word is the answer to correctly direct our lives. Proverbs 28.

"As the refining pot for silver and the furnace for gold. So is a man to his praise." Did you know that a refining pot is used to purify silver? And that a furnace is used to purify gold? As Solomon wrote these words he compared the process of praise in a man's life to the process of purifying silver and gold.

To me, this is encouraging. There have been many times in days gone by where the enemy was waging a great war to try and derail me from my faith. In some areas of my life, my choices didn't help me in the fight to win the battle. Do you want to know what helped in my purifying? Praise and worship. Singing songs of praise to God.

Something I have learned since 1991 that has become a foundation in my spiritual walk with God, is that no matter what comes my way, bad choices, low-income, bad friends, heartache, etc. I choose to get into the Word and study it. But the most important thing was my praise and worship. In my loneliest days, praise got me through. In the hardest heartaches, praise got me through. Praise is a mighty weapon. Proverbs 27.
