There's a plain white wooden church in Augusta that has been holding services since 1787. That makes Springfield Baptist one of the oldest independent Black congregations in the entire country, older than most things people call historic. ⛪

Here's the part that still gives me chills. In 1867, a school for freedmen opened in that church's basement. That little basement class grew up to become Morehouse College. 📚

A whole legacy of Black leadership started in a church cellar in Georgia, and most folks drive right past it. Did you grow up near a church that carried more history than the history books ever gave it?
