I see lots of skippers tying up with just a bow and a stern line. The two (extra) spring lines add a significant level of security, while also preventing the boat from drifting forward and aft, potentially scrubbing the side of the boat. Which spring line arrangement you choose will often depend upon available cleats both on your boat and on the dock. Where possible, avoid running any two lines from/to the same cleat (insurance against a cleat breaking).
