Step inside one of Salem’s most storied landmarks at The House of the Seven Gables.

Open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., this historic property offers more than a glimpse into the past. Built in 1668 by merchant and shipowner John Turner, the waterfront mansion later became the inspiration for Nathaniel Hawthorne’s 1851 novel and remains one of Salem’s most recognizable sites.

Its history also reaches beyond literature. In 1910, Caroline Emmerton restored the house and opened it as both a museum and a Settlement House to support Salem’s immigrant community. That mission still carries forward today through cultural programming as well as free English language and citizenship classes.
