Authorâs Note:
I didnât write this to win an argument. I wrote it because the conversation around this trial â and this book â has gotten louder, crueler, and further from the reason weâre all here. I know people are angry. I know the stakes feel personal. But maybe, before we keep typing, we can take a breath and remember what this is really about. Not likes. Not sides. Justice. I wrote this because:
đď¸ Why Are We Even Here?
Because something about this case doesnât feel right.
Because justice isnât supposed to need a second chance when the jury already spoke.
Because when the state loses â and just tries again â itâs not just Karen Read on trial.
Itâs all of us.
But look at us.
Arguing. Insulting. Forgetting why we came in the first place.
We're letting the system divide us so we donât unite against it.
đ This Is the Paradox of Our Time
We have taller buildings but shorter tempers,
Wider freeways but narrower viewpoints.
We spend more, but have less. We buy more, but enjoy less.
We have bigger houses and smaller families,
More conveniences, but less time.
More medicine, but less wellness.
We talk to thousands online, yet feel more alone than ever.
We can livestream a trial in HD, but still canât see the truth.
We know how to program a phone â but not how to hold a respectful conversation.
Weâve learned how to make a living⌠but not a life.
Weâve added years to life, but not life to years.
Weâve conquered outer space, but not inner space.
Weâve cleaned up the air, but polluted our souls.
Weâve split the atom, but not our prejudice.
And now, here we are:
A woman on trial again for something a jury already rejected.
A man dead without the justice he deserves.
And a public turning on each other over comment threads instead of coming together to demand answers.
This trial isnât about sides. Itâs about something bigger:
Truth. Trust. And the terrifying idea that theyâll do this again â unless we speak up.
