On September 30, 1906, the very first Gordon Bennett balloon race launched from the Tuileries Gardens in Paris, beginning what would become the world’s oldest and most prestigious balloon competition.

The challenge was simple: fly farther than everyone else.

More than a century later, the race is still going.
