Erbil, known in ancient texts as Arbela, is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, with history stretching back more than 6,000 years.
At its heart rises the Citadel of Erbil, a massive mound formed by centuries of rebuilding, layer upon layer, generation after generation.

What the name means
• The earliest recorded form appears as Urbilum in ancient Mesopotamian sources.
• In the Assyrian period, the name is written Arba-ilu / Arbela, commonly understood to mean “Four Gods.”
This reflects Erbil’s role as a powerful religious center, especially associated with Ishtar of Arbela, one of the most revered deities in Assyria.

Why Erbil mattered

Under the Assyrian Empire, Arbela was a sacred and political city. Kings consulted its temples, armies passed through its gates, and its position linked the Mesopotamian plains with the Zagros regions.

Erbil is not just old.
Its name, its citadel, and its streets still carry the memory of ancient Mesopotamia, standing where history was never erased, only built upon.

Ur & Uruk – Where Civilization Began

Long before the modern world, southern Iraq was home to cities that shaped human history.

Ur was a powerful Sumerian city, renowned for its wealth, trade, and advanced urban planning. It is famous for the Great Ziggurat of Ur, dedicated to the moon god Nanna (Sin), and stands as a symbol of early economic and administrative sophistication.

Uruk is considered the world’s first true city. Here, humanity witnessed the birth of writing (cuneiform), organized city life, and monumental architecture. Uruk is also the legendary city of King Gilgamesh and the sacred center of the goddess Inanna.

Together, Ur and Uruk represent the foundations of urban life, culture, and knowledge —
a legacy that began in Iraq, the heart of Mesopotamia.

Iraq is not just history — it is where history began.

An Architectural Icon Over 5,000 Years Old — Still Standing.

Uruk | Iraq

More than five millennia ago, Uruk rose as one of the world’s first great cities.
Its architecture was not merely construction — it was identity, belief, and power shaped in brick and stone.

Etymology tells the story:
deeply rooted, enduring, and inseparable from the land that gave birth to civilization itself.

Uruk is not just ancient history.
It is a living testimony to how deeply civilization is rooted in Iraq.

🕯️ Where architecture became memory — and memory became civilization.

The Mysterious Fuente Magna: A Sumerian Inscription in South America?

In 1950, near Lake Titicaca in Bolivia, a local farmer made an unusual discovery while working his field: a large carved stone vessel decorated with animal figures and symbols. Unaware of its possible significance, he used it for years as a trough for pigs.

The vessel, later known as “Fuente Magna,” eventually ended up in a small local museum, where it remained largely ignored for nearly 40 years.

What changed everything was a remarkable observation:
the inner surface of the vessel is covered with inscriptions resembling ancient cuneiform writing, strikingly similar to Sumerian or proto-Sumerian script, used in Mesopotamia over 5,000 years ago.

The artifact was examined by epigraphist Clyde Winters, who noted that the inscriptions show similarities not only to Sumerian, but also to Dravidian, Elamite, and ancient Berber scripts.

This raises a fascinating question:
How could an object bearing cuneiform-like inscriptions be found near Lake Titicaca—at an altitude of 3,800 meters above sea level, on a different continent thousands of kilometers away from Mesopotamia?

If the artifact is authentic, one possible explanation is that ancient seafarers transported it across oceans more than five millennia ago. Some theories suggest early mariners—possibly from regions such as Sundaland—may have reached the Americas, bringing plants like coconuts and perhaps even cultural objects such as the Fuente Magna.

While highly debated and controversial, the Fuente Magna continues to fuel discussion about the possibility that ancient civilizations were far more interconnected than we traditionally believe.

🕯️ History still holds many unanswered questions.

Irving Finkel
is one of the most influential voices in the world when it comes to promoting the history of ancient Iraq.
Today, I watched his appearance on the Lex Fridman Podcast, and once again, his deep respect for Mesopotamian civilization was clearly visible — not only in his words, but even in his details.

He was wearing a blue tie decorated with the legendary Babylonian Mushussu (the dragon of Marduk), a design inspired by the Ishtar Gate. A small detail, yet a powerful symbol of how ancient Iraqi civilization continues to live, inspire, and speak to the world thousands of years later.

Mesopotamia is not just history — it is a living heritage that still shapes global culture, science, and identity.

🇮🇶 Welcome to Iraqi Civilisation — The Cradle of Humanity

Iraq is not just a country; it is where human civilisation began.

🌍 Why Iraq Matters

Iraq — ancient Mesopotamia — is one of the oldest cultural centers on Earth. It is home to:
• Sumerians: creators of the first writing (cuneiform)

• Babylonians: fathers of law, astronomy, and the legendary city of Babylon
• Assyrians: masters of architecture, warfare, and early libraries

Here, humanity developed farming, cities, mathematics, medicine, astronomy, and organized governance.
