🍂 Safety Saturday – Presented by Steel America 🍂

Fall is in the air… but let’s make sure it’s not on the job site.

Did you know that falls are one of the leading dangers in shipyards? That’s why fall protection isn’t optional, it’s critical.

Myth 1: “I don’t need to wear my harness if I’m just working for a few minutes.”
Fact: Most falls happen in an instant—short tasks still require full fall protection.

Myth 2: “As long as I’m wearing my harness, I’m protected.”
Fact: A harness only works if it’s worn correctly, connected to the right anchor, and inspected before use.

This week, our very own Safety Supervisor, Ricky Julien, will demonstrate a quick tutorial on how to inspect your harness—checking webbing, stitching, and hardware—so your gear is ready when you need it most.

Taking Pride in our work means gearing up the right way—no shortcuts, every time. Because the best way to handle a fall… is to prevent it.

🚧 Safety Saturday - Presented by Steel America 🚧

Every Saturday, we’ll spotlight our commitment to safety across Colonna’s Shipyard, Steel America, and Weld America with tips, examples, and team highlights.

Rooted in our values of Respect, Pride, Truth, and Family, this series reminds us that safety isn’t just a requirement—it’s a responsibility we all share.

👷 This week’s spotlight: Ricky Julien, Safety Supervisor – Colonna’s Shipyard

Ricky has been part of the Colonna’s family for nearly eight years, beginning as a temporary worker in 2017 before stepping into his current leadership role. As Safety Supervisor, Ricky serves as the vital link between regulations like OSHA, NAVSEA, NFPA, and ANSI and our operations teams—ensuring production is completed safely and in compliance with the highest standards. His responsibilities include safety training, industrial sampling, inspections, and supporting our evolving production schedule

💡 Ricky’s safety tip he never skips:
“One safety tip that I never skip relates to Pillar #1: Safety is Everyone's job – all the time. Ensuring safety at the jobsite can be done by any and everyone here at Colonna's Shipyard and it is an honor to be a safety contact for information, guidance, assistance to ensure a strong safety culture company wide.”

❤️ His motivation:
“My motivation for staying safe and making sure my teammates do the same is simple, Family. We all have a life outside Colonna's gates, somebody or something that is waiting for us to get home. It is my personal wish that everyone that comes to work for Colonna's Shipyard returns to their home the same way, if not, better condition than when they started work that day.”

Ricky’s commitment is a powerful reminder of our values —and the importance of looking out for one another every single day.

What’s one safety tip you never skip?

🌺 Hawaiian Shirt Fridays at Steel America 🌺

Hawaiian Shirt Friday has become somewhat of a tradition around Steel America—even beyond just our division. Every week, you can spot team members celebrating the end of the week in their boldest, brightest prints.

Recently, we turned up the fun with a Hawaiian Shirt Contest, where some of our finest “vacationers-at-heart” went head-to-head for prizes and bragging rights:

🥇 1st Place – Connor Devlin, Inside Machine Shop Apprentice
Connor stole the show with a Hello Kitty Hawaiian shirt, earning the award for most unique style.

🥈 2nd Place – Daniel Erdogan, Engineering Designer
Daniel kept it classy with a floral pattern—professional enough for the office, yet festive enough for Friday.

🥉 3rd Place – Nick Horne, Superintendent III
Nick channeled his inner Tom Selleck with a classic look. He claimed it brought out his eyes, though his sunglasses kept us guessing.

A big thank-you to everyone who joined in on the fun, and to Elizabeth Crutchfield for spearheading the event! We’re looking forward to making this a recurring tradition and seeing even more creativity next time.
