"Street History" Series featuring the Roads of North East

LOCATION: Woodmere on the Lake

🍇 The Woodmere on the Lake development was owned and developed by Robert & LaSalle Felheim and recorded at the Erie County Courthouse in 1924. It consisted of seventy-seven 50 x 100 foot lots which were mostly sold by the 1950s.

Most of the buildings were originally summer cottages with just a few full-time homes thrown in. Today most of the buildings are full-time homes with just a few cottages remaining.

For a long time the development ran its own water system that was eventually replaced by city water as water mains were extended further along Lake Road from town.

Some of the choice lots for cottages were on the west side of the beachfront, but these cottages were often damaged by lake storms and eventually destroyed so there are none remaining today.

"Street History" Series featuring the Roads of North East

LOCATION: Windswept Subdivision

🍇 Located off West Law Road is the Windswept Subdivision, home to 38 family dwellings and development continues to grow rapidly. We have one church family who lives on Ginny Lane and actively prays for their neighborhood.

Interestingly five streets in this subdivision are named after the developer’s family with the exception of Windy Lane. The four streets are Brooke Lane, Dar Lane, Ginny Lane and Ruby Lane.

In 1984 the land was purchased from Thomas and Ella Riefstahl. In 1990, the first home situated on the corner of Ruby and West Law Road was built.

The land originally owned by the Benjamin Ross family was used for farming, dairy cattle and vineyards.

LOCATION: West Main Street [ Part 6 ]

🍇 Saint Gregory’s School began in 1941 with the purchase of the house of former Erie Mayor Frank A Mizener. It started as a elementary school for grades 1 & 2 and grew to a complete elementary and high school. A gymnasium was built on the property in 1952 and a separate grade school building was added in 1961. The last class to graduate from the high school was in 1968 and the original house was torn down soon after.

"Street History" Series featuring the Roads of North East

LOCATION: West Main Street [ Part 5 ]

🍇 In front of the Rite Aid Pharmacy is a small memorial stone dedicated to a Pennsylvania Highway Patrolman shot and killed in the street there. His name is Russell T. Swanson and he was only 25 years old at the time of his death. It was April 19, 1929 when Patrolman Swanson stopped a car at a checkpoint on Route 20 near Cemetery Road. He discovered an out-of-state driver without license and proof of ownership. Suspecting foul play he ordered the men to drive to Justice Pease’s and he followed on his motorcycle. Just after passing Mill Street the men in the car shot through the rear window of the car and killed Swanson. Philip Hirtzel was instrumental in tracking down the perpetrators who were all caught and convicted of the murder.

"Street History" Series featuring the Roads of North East

LOCATION: WEST MAIN STREET [ PART 3 ]

🍇 On the southeast corner of Pearl and West Main Streets where the Bella Salon is located there once stood a hotel/guesthouse called “The Beehive.” This building was torn down in 1904 and a house with offices was built for the Doctors Ford and Louis Heard. In 1927 Doctor Carl Karsh bought the property and lived and maintained his office there until retiring. In 1979 this became the North East Health Care Center which eventually became offices for Hamot Hospital health care providers until 2000.

On the southwest corner of this intersection is The Episcopal Church of The Holy Cross which started meeting as a mission of the St. Paul’s Church of Erie in the chapel of the North East Seminary. When the directors of the Seminary passed a resolution prohibiting any church from holding services there, they held services in a variety of places until purchasing their current land in 1878 and built the church we see today. Across Main Street from the church was once the
home of Forrie Hopkins, owner of The Breeze and a member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives.
Many people remember when Forrie kept his racehorses on this property. To the west of this house is the house of longtime North East Mayor, Howard F. Eaton.
