Gulf of America: The Gulf of Mexico was named after Mexico because mariners needed to cross it to reach that destination. The name has been in use since at least the 16th century.

The name first appeared on a world map in 1550 and in a historical account in 1552.

In 2010, Stephen Colbert joked about the idea of renaming the gulf to the Gulf of America.
