Have you ever heard of "Puffling Season?"

It is the annual period, usually in late August and early September, when young Atlantic puffins (pufflings) are ready to leave their burrows and fly to sea for the first time. In locations like Iceland's Vestmannaeyjar islands (where we just visited this summer!), pufflings might get disoriented by town lights and fly inland instead, so residents form a "Puffling Patrol" to rescue these birds. The saved pufflings are then gently thrown into the ocean the next morning to help them begin their journey at sea!

I'm gearing up to plan a short puffling adventure for my daughter and I next September! Let me know if you'd like more information to take a similar trip ... or maybe something different to incorporate your own animal encounter!
