Travel update: strikes and demonstrations in Europe and the UK
We are keeping an eye on several planned strikes and demonstrations across Europe and the UK this week, and we wanted to share what is scheduled so you can plan with extra time and check your specific bookings.
Thursday, October 29, Spain: A 24 hour Renfe train drivers strike has been called for Thursday. Minimum service levels have been set, but they do not guarantee your specific train, so please check directly with Renfe. High speed service between Madrid and Andalusia remains suspended after today's fatal train collision near Toledo, and the Madrid tractor march planned for today was postponed out of respect for the victims. No new date has been set.
Thursday evening into Friday, October 30, Italy: A nationwide general strike has been called from 9 p.m. Thursday through 8:59 p.m. Friday. It may affect trains, flights, taxis, highways and local transport, and the impact may vary by city and operator. A demonstration is scheduled in Rome on Friday morning near Roma Termini. Ground handling action is also listed at Pisa and Florence airports on Friday. Please check directly with your airline and train operator.
Saturday, October 31: Demonstrations are planned in France, with a nationwide strike day to follow on November 5. Demonstrations are also planned in Germany, in multiple cities. Organisers have called a gathering outside the US Embassy in London. In Barcelona, calls for October 31 action are circulating online, but no single confirmed program or route has been established.
What we recommend: Allow extra time, check your flight, train and transfer directly with the provider before you leave, avoid large crowds and demonstration areas, and follow local guidance. Plans can change quickly, and we will share updates as confirmed information becomes available.
