First stop on Ellen and Janice's trip is Rurutu, a small island in the Austral archipelago that most travelers have never even heard of. From July to October, humpback whales make the incredible journey from Antarctica to the warm waters here, and it's one of the best places in the world to see them.

They'll be staying at a small local pension and heading out on regulated whale watching and snorkeling excursions. When they're not out looking for whales, there's plenty more to explore, including some seriously good hiking, Rurutu's famous caves, and getting around the island by quad bike.

Rurutu is about as far from the big resorts as it gets, and that's exactly what makes it so special. Real Tahiti, at its most authentic. 🌊

Say "Tahiti" and most people picture one thing: an overwater bungalow and a whole lot of blue water. And that experience is absolutely worth having.

But French Polynesia is made up of five archipelagos, each with its own character. Some are busy and well known, some are tiny communities where life moves slower, and some are home to incredible lagoons and world class snorkeling.

Here's something most cruisers don't know. Venice's cruise terminal sits well outside the historic center, and most ships never get any closer.

Windstar is the exception. Wind Spirit is small enough to sail the Giudecca Canal and dock right in the heart of the city, a privilege the big ships simply are not allowed. You step off the yacht and you are already there.
