US Virgin Islands passes sunscreen ban

The US Virgin Islands will be the first to ban certain sunscreens that threaten marine environments.

The sunscreen ban kicks in fully next March with 'certain limitations beginning immediately' after a bill was signed.

The ban starts before similar restrictions begin in Hawaii and Key West

It bans the importation, distribution and sale of sunscreens which contain oxybenzone, octinoxate and octocrylene, which the U.S. Food and Drug Administration says are 'not safe or effective.' BUT the USVI ban goes one step further by outlawing octocrylene as well.

The bill was passed unanimously.

"Tourism in the Virgin Islands is our lifeblood—but to ensure we continue to entice visitors we need to protect our coral reefs as part of our quest to initiate sustainable tourism," said Gov. Albert Bryan.

The full ban takes effect in March 2020.

Curaçao’s Immigration Card Goes Fully Digital

The Curaçao Tourist Board (CTB) is collaborating with the Government of Curaçao and Curaçao International Airport to switch to a fully online immigration card in a continuing effort to simplify travel to Curaçao. As of October 1, 2019, it is required to fill in the Digital Immigration Card, meaning passengers visiting the island must now go online to www.dicardcuracao.com to fill out the Digital Immigration Card prior to their trip. This contributes to a seamless travel experience while promoting a green approach by reducing the use of paper, according to the CTB.

To help with a successful transition, the CTB has been in close contact with its local and international partners to assist in informing all visitors about the digitalization of the card.

The following are some quick facts about the Digital Immigration Card:

The Digital Immigration Card is required per person per trip, regardless of age

People born in Curaçao, who are not registered at the Civil Registry of Curaçao, are required to fill out the Digital Immigration Card
Any person traveling to Curaçao by air, who is not registered at the island’s Civil Registry, is required by the local government to have this form filled out prior to entry at airport immigration
Passengers are requested to fill out the form online via their mobile devices or personal computer prior to arrival as soon as they have all travel details
Once a passenger has filled out the Digital Immigration Card, they can edit or update the card as needed by selecting the option “Edit your submitted immigration card”
The information submitted on the Digital Immigration Card will be processed in compliance with Curaçao law (Article 25 of the Ordinance for data protection)

For additional information regarding the Digital Immigration Card or technical support, passengers are requested to contact [email protected].

Believe it or not, renting a car with a debit card can hurt your credit. Why? Doing so can trigger a "hard" inquiry. In the fine print of many auto rental agreements is a provision giving the car company the right to pull your credit report if you pay with a debit card. Who knew?!?

Real Confusion caused by Real ID
What you should know to fly next year, and the driver’s license you’ll need !.. Oct. 1, 2020, is the day the Real ID law will finally be enforced. Conceived as part of 2005 legislation in the wake of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, it requires people to show security-enhanced IDs to pass through airport security checkpoints or to enter certain federal facilities, such as military bases. (You will also be able to use passports or certain other federal documents as an alternative to a Real ID.).. • To get a Real ID, you need to present documents to your motor vehicle department proving your age and identity, Social Security number and address. That generally means bringing a birth certificate or passport, a Social Security card or tax form such as a W-2, and two proofs of address. If you’ve changed your name through marriage, you’ll need a marriage certificate... Sometimes called the Star Card, because most states are marking their Real ID cards with a gold or black star in the top right corner, it also must include an encoded “machine readable zone,” like a passport’s, with a person’s scannable information. Many state driver’s licenses already have this feature. The key thing that makes the card “special,” is that the federal government requires you to provide certain identifying documentation to obtain one from your state... • Although the Real ID is also a driver’s license, the old-style driver’s license is still lawful for driving and still available as an option in many states.. • To fly, however, a “regular” driver's license won’t be sufficient to get through security and onto a plane. The Real ID technically is not mandatory because you can instead use a passport or an ID from the federal government’s Trusted Traveler Program, such as a Global Entry card. .. • For international travel, you’ll still need a passport... You can check your state’s status on the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s site, which has a color-coded clickable map, though you’ll find more detail on your state government’s site. https://www.dhs.gov/real-id ... Make sure all 1st name and Last names are the same on all you documents you plan to summit !! .. My SS card has the name "Bob" not my real name "Robert" , so double check everything. You will now need nine proof of ID to get a "Real ID" drivers license.

The REAL ID Act establishes minimum security standards for license issuance and production and prohibits Federal agencies from accepting for certain purposes driver’s licenses and identification cards from states not meeting the Act’s minimum standards.

Southwest Airlines announced news for travelers.

The nation's largest domestic carrier said it plans to end flights at Newark Liberty International Airport in Newark, New Jersey, on Nov. 3, consolidating its operations in metropolitan New York at LaGuardia Airport. Southwest has 20 daily departures from Newark to 10 cities including Baltimore, Chicago, Denver and Phoenix. Affected travelers will be rebooked or can receive a refund.

If you've flown a major airline in the past seven years, you could be part of a multi-million dollar settlement.

Passengers allege in a class action lawsuit against American, Delta, Southwest and United that the airlines worked together to raise prices. American Airlines settled for $45 million and Southwest settled for $15 million, though both still deny having done anything wrong. The lawsuit is still ongoing against Delta and United.

Emails have gone out to those who are eligible to take part in the suit. If you're not sure, it's anyone who purchased flights within the United States from American, Delta, Southwest, United, Continental or US Airways anytime between July 1, 2011 and December 20, 2017 for the $15 million Southwest settlement, or between July 1, 2011 and June 14, 2018 for the $45 million American settlement.

A special website has been set up detailing information on the lawsuit and settlements, including how to sign up to get more information as it develops.

"We will continue to defend ourselves against these claims, which we have always maintained are without merit," a spokesperson for United told NBC station WESH.

JetBlue Raises Cost of Checked Bags

Three years after the carrier announced its first fees for checked bags, JetBlue is now one of the industry leaders in bag fee hikes.

JetBlue will become the first major airline to charge $30 for a traveler's first checked bag.

Starting Aug. 27, JetBlue will begin charging $30 for the first bag, and $40 for the second, and $150 for the third bag for travelers purchasing its base, Blue fare ticket. Those prices are up from the $25 the company had previously charged for a first checked bag, $30 for a second, and $100 for a third.

With the increase, JetBlue will become the first major airline to charge $30 for a traveler’s first checked bag. Most other major American carriers — including American, Delta, and United — all charge $25 for the first checked bag; while Southwest still allows for two free checked bags.

JetBlue travelers can get a free checked bag by upgrading to the Blue Plus fare, which is usually about $15 more than the base fare ticket.
