If you want a travel club, here’s what you do:
1) when you are in the shuttle to or from Orlando, talk to your fellow passengers about it. Wouldn’t they prefer to avoid the ordeal of the Orlando airport? Wouldn’t they prefer the virtually empty Ocala airport? Wouldn’t they prefer the much shorter trip to and fromthe Ocala airport?
2) When making your reservations for your next cruise or tour, tell your travel agent you want a quote on a direct nonstop flight from Ocala to the departure point for your tour or cruise.
3) Join a special interest group at your retirement community that is oriented towards travel and talk up all of the benefits of a members only travel club you have read about here.
4) Be ready to refer to the success of the model as implemented by the Nomads in the Detroit area, Ambassadair in Indianapolis, Ports of Call in Denver, and others. The Four Seasons / NetJets joint venture is doing it right now. Atlas Ocean Voyages offers an inclusive Antarctic cruise package incorporating the same basic building blocks.

It’s been a while since our last post. Conversations are heating up again, leading to some tweaks to our business plan in order to provide better value to our members.
After extensive consultations with seasoned travel club operators and their aviation partners, we have concluded that operating our own aviation service is an unnecessary extravagance. Think of it this way: as basically a travel agency, we broker space on cruise ships and hotels. The same principle applies to air and ground transportation. By aligning with the same kind of quality partners as we do with hotels and cruise lines, we can deliver the personalized, luxury experience that is at the core of our value proposition, while avoiding unnecessary overhead, for you and for us.

So Delta Air Lines was my United antidote today. Arrival gate A38, connecting departure gate A39. Arrived final destination one hour ahead of schedule. Plus, my return outbound scheduled departure has been moved up by two hours. I never even heard of such a thing. Thank you, Delta!

So I spoke with a consultant today regarding our travel club. He grasps the value proposition. But he needs to see tangible results before presenting the opportunity to the investor he has in mind. The decades of success of Detroit’s Nomad Club (and their successor, NexTour) is insufficient tangible results. So are the TCS packages and the Four Seasons / NextJet jv, and the Atlas all inclusive Antarctica packages, all incorporating all the same basic elements except for geographic focus. It’s up to you. Get the gravepine burning up so all of you can experience these benefits. Every time.

For the most part here, we talk about you. The operative premise being that our success is a byproduct of your success. But today I’m going to talk a little about me, for the purpose of tying the two topics together.

In our culture, especially our consumer culture, the widespread perception is that when people try to sell you something, it is a swindle to some degree. So what reason would you have to think, much believe, we are materially different? I’m glad you asked.

In seventh grade social studies, we took a standardized career aptitude test. My ideal career was determined to be social worker. Somewhat unlikely for an MBA.

But my undergraduate major was marketing, where I came under the influence of a direct disciple of arguably the guru of marketing, Philip Kotler, whose premise was any successful business succeeds by providing benefits to customers.

So, to me, the fit was natural.

It’s all too easy to stereotype marketing as convincing customers to buy things they don’t want or need. And I’m not claiming that doesn’t happen. Any tool can and does get misused. I’m not going to dwell on it other than to ask the rhetorical question of would you say everything you buy is as the result of that mechanism.

Nothing you buy provides meaningful benefits to you that you perceive to be worth the price? Of course not.

And regardless of your attitudes about marketers and marketing, you become aware of the existence those products and services, and their cost benefit value proposition, is marketing.

So what is the point?

I have been mainly telling you about the benefits to you of our proposed travel club. Because we believe we offer benefits that are worth the cost of acquiring access to them. Everybody wins!

I have faith in you. You can tell if I am accurately portraying reality. And if what we are proposing is worth paying for. What exactly is your break even price is a judgment only you can make for yourself. But we are certain it is a win win. Discuss.

I think I’m going to start a ‘twelve days of Christmas’ style breakdown of the benefits to a members only travel club serving Ocala.

Spoiler alert 🚨: there might be more than twelve.

Also, I encourage you to think of it as a poll. Which one is most important to you? Which ones are most important? Feel free to rank them all, or just the ones you view as difference makers.

I think I will try to list them in order of eliminating the most acute pain points compared to the existing arrangements.

#1 Service provided via a dedicated, exclusive, luxury terminal at Ocala Airport.

#2 All premium seating on the club's full size, wide body commercial jet.

#3 In what may be our only membership requirement, for the benefit of our members, TSA PreCheck or Global Entry will be a condition of membership. These programs streamline the security screening process, and reduce its intrusive requirements.

#4 Clear customs in Ocala upon returning to the U.S., instead of the first U.S. airport you arrive at (Boston, Seattle, Miami, Anchorage, Honolulu, L.A., DFW, Atlanta, New York, Philadelphia, Charlotte, Chicago…)

#5 Provide your travel preferences one time, at the time of membership onboarding, instead with every service provider every time you travel.

#6 Enjoy your favorite foods and beverages, just the way you like them, whether in the members only departure lounge, or on board.

#7 One of our trained and experienced concierges accompanies every tour to ensure the smoothest experience possible.

#8 Amenities kit for each member. Noise canceling premium headphones, slippers, pillows, blankets. What else?

#9 One time membership fee. No additional monthly, or annual, or per trip dues. None. And our packages are not marked up to accomplish the same end result. Our superior cost structure enables our packages to be priced competitively with the existing a là carte model.

#10 Piggybacking on today’s post from a friend I shared, we’ll take the opportunity to point out we will have a standby plane that will be a clone of our standard plane. It will not only enable maintenance on our base aircraft, it will also be available to fill in should our primary plane experience a mechanical issue requiring immediate maintenance.

#11 Shifting gears a little, now think about the membership dues at your country club. Make sure to include the annual renewal fees, greens fees, everything you pay for as long as you are a member. Then, think about the tangible benefits you receive. A cursory survey of prominent clubs reveals that those membership initiation and renewal fees can be tens and tens of thousands of dollars. Can you honestly say the tangible benefits you receive are more valuable to you than the lifetime benefits of our travel club, especially when you consider that it is a one time (ONE. TIME.) initiation fee without any additional fees, ever?

For each item, mentally place yourself to the best of your ability in the situation using the worst experience you have had personally. Remember how you were feeling in that moment. Take your time.

Another tale shared by a Facbook friend: 'How's this for an epic fail?
United Airlines marketed a flight from Guam to Honolulu, scheduled to depart at 7:30 a.m. on Jan 1, 2024 and arriving at 6:50 pm. on December 31, 2023 as a "time travel" flight and "opportunity to experience two New Year's Eves."
The flight actually departed at 1:49 p.m. and landed at 12:34 a.m., both on Jan 1, 2024.
Nippon Airways and Cathay Pacific also played games with the International Date Line, but succeeded.'

Just another opportunity to call you out, United .
