Art, Culture, Music, fabulous!

Want to shake things up?

Big Chief Juan Pardo of the Golden Comanche Mardi Gras Indians leads a workshop with students on the intricate beading and sewing that is central to New Orleans musical tradition. He'll introduce both the art form and the larger history, and students will leave with their own beaded piece.

Mardi Gras Indian Tribes emerged as tightly knit communities of African-American performers and artisans who had been excluded from mainstream Carnival festivities. These Tribes founded their own secret societies and parades. Core to this cultural legacy are regalia, dance, and music, which keep alive African traditions while paying homage to the Native American tribes who once shielded formerly-enslaved peoples from recapture.

As influential as the Mardi Gras Indians have been to the aesthetics and flair of Mardi Gras, they are equally as influential in the development of New Orleans music. As the late New Orleans legend Dr. John put it, “New Orleans music is Afro-Caribbean, Afro-Cuban, and Mardi Gras Indian.”

Free to the public. All materials provided. Limited spots available.

This workshop is held in conjunction with Luther Dickinson's "Music Inspired by the Seven Climates." These two programs are funded, in part, by a grant from South Arts in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts and the Mississippi Arts Commission. Additional support provided by the R&B Feder Foundation, Balch & Bingham, Chandeleur Island Brewing Company, Mitchell Distributing, Allen Beverages, and Cathead Distillery.

Have you got your tickets yet?! Your favorite WAMA concert is back!

One of the most unique musical experiences in the South, Luther Dickinson of the North Mississippi Allstars is joined by collaborators to ignite a night of rock, funk, blues, and musical experimentation inspired by the unbridled creativity of Anderson’s landmark murals in the Ocean Springs Community Center.

Each year, Dickinson assembles a cast of professional musicians from across the region and country to pay homage to Anderson’s coastal magnum opus. The music they perform is arranged by Dickinson, who first conceived of the concert series after having an experience with Walter Anderson’s murals. “...The phenomenon of hearing art or seeing music, I’ve never had that experience before except in this room,” says Dickinson of the Community Center. “Anderson’s murals come alive for me as an orchestral score...”

This year's concert is the sixth annual in the ever-evolving series.

Spooky Springs @ The Scary C is coming back for two nights instead of one this year, and the haunted house will be even larger!
Come in your best costume and enjoy the spooky haunted house, games on the front lawn, trick or treating on the street, dancing with hype characters, and so much more! This event is open to the public and fun for all ages.
This year's haunted house theme is "80s thriller movies." The OS High School Theatre students have been hard at work on putting together an exciting storyline that coinsides with their theme. Come enjoy memorable scenes and cameos from characters you grew up watching during the Halloween season.
There is a suggested $5 donation this year for entry into the haunted house. All donations will go towards supporting the Ocean Springs High School Theatre department's Scotland trip!
