Day 10- ALBEROBELLO
ALBEROBELLO AND LECCE - GUIDED TOUR
Example of visit (wine tasting at Albea Cantina Museo included.
Nestled on a plain at the foot of the Salento plateau is Lecce? called the "Florence of the south"? one of the most interesting cities in the region for its typically seventeenth-century architectural features. Of very ancient origins, the city experienced two particularly flourishing moments: that of the Roman era and that of the Kingdom of Naples. Precisely in this period there was a great development in the construction of buildings, monuments and stately
palaces characterized by a sumptuous and rich ornamental and architectural scenography which earned the definition of "Leccese baroque". The imaginative and meticulous sculpture work was facilitated by the use of local stone, ductile and easy to inlay. Continue to Alberobello and visit the historic center: the Monti district which includes many trulli unique for their
exterior, which converge at the top of the hill where the trullo church of S. Antonio dominates; the Aia Piccola district which includes trulli still used today as homes.

ALBEA CANTINA MUSEO - ALBEROBELLO (GUIDED TOUR AND TASTING)
Tasting of a white, a rosé and a red with tarallini and water.

Day 11 BARI - MATERA - BARI - GUIDED TOUR
Guided tour of Bari Vecchia (the Old Town). There will be a walk along the Porto Vecchio to the famous Basilica di San Nicola dating back to the 11th-12th century and dedicated to Bishop Nicholas. The Basilica di San Nicola represents the greatest example of Romanesque architecture in Apulia. Inside we find the Elias Chair (episcopal chair made entirely of marble) dating back to the 12th century and the Crypt, where the
remains of St Nicholas are kept.
The tour continues to the Cathedral of San Sabino, whose original core dates back to the Byzantine period, but has
undergone numerous renovations over the centuries, and concludes with the 13th-century Swabian Castle, which now houses some of the offices of the Sovrintendenza. No entrance fee is charged. Curiosity:
- every Thursday morning an Orthodox mass is celebrated in the Basilica of St Nicholas, more precisely in the crypt
where the Saint's tomb is kept.
- on 07/08/09 May each year the patron saint's day is celebrated in the old town of Bari
- every year during the Solstice on 21/06 at 17h10 at the Church of St Sabinus (who was patron saint before St Nicholas) a breathtaking spectacle can be admired: the light filtering through the rose window of the church is projected onto the floor to match the mosaic at the foot of the altar in the nave.
- An interesting stop at the 'strada dell'orecchiette' where it is possible to watch the preparation of homemade orecchiette by Bari ladies directly outside their homes who are happy to share their experience and advice with
visitors.

MATERA - GUIDED TOUR (3H GUIDE)
The walk through the 'Sassi di Matera' shows a unique example of a rock settlement. A city completely carved out of the rock, a set of caves stacked on top of each other in an incredible living sculpture. The Sassi were inhabited until 1952, when a special law put an end to this 'habitation'. The guided tour of Matera and the Sassi, will allow the visitor to understand the various phases of the city's evolution, from prehistory, to the urban evolution of Matera,
the period of the displacement of the Rioni Sassi and the subsequent inclusion of the city and the Sassi in the
UNESCO World Heritage List.
