🚢 Is river cruising for me?
If you like waking up in a new place, exploring historic towns, and watching the scenery roll by, a river cruise might be right up your alley.
💵 What does it cost?
For a 7-night European river cruise, a realistic planning range is about $3,000–$5,000 per person, before airfare. You’ll sometimes find lower fares, while luxury lines and peak-season departures can cost more.
🍽️ What’s usually included?
Your stateroom, meals onboard, and at least some guided tours are commonly included. Drinks, Wi-Fi, gratuities, airfare, and extra excursions depend on the cruise line and fare, so it’s worth checking the details before comparing prices.
🌊 How is it different from an ocean cruise? Very different! Think floating 5 star hotel. It's much more about the ports. River ships are smaller and sail right into the heart of many towns and cities. You’ll usually have a port stop most days, with the riverbanks and villages as your scenery. Ocean ships offer more restaurants, pools, shows, activities, and sea days, and can take you to a wider range of destinations, but often you cannot port in town.
🤢 Worried about seasickness?
River cruising is generally a smoother ride since you’re traveling on inland waterways instead of the open sea. It may be a comfortable option if ship movement is a concern, though no trip can promise you’ll never feel motion.

River cruising is a great fit for travelers who want the destinations to be the main event. If you want big-ship entertainment and lots to do onboard, an ocean cruise may suit you better.
