What began as a water line repair this week turned into an exciting discovery in the Cowboy Capital. City crews digging near the original Front Street struck a large wooden chest, stamped with the initials S.B. and with the crumbling remains of a note reading “Back soon. Don’t touch.”

In Ogallala's Wild West days, outlaw Sam Bass and his gang were known to frequent local saloons, especially the Crystal Palace. In September of 1877, they robbed the train at Big Springs, NE in what became the single largest heist in the history of the Union Pacific railroad. $60,000 in freshly minted $20 gold pieces were stolen, much of it never recovered. The gang split up and fled the area. Bass and 3 gang members were killed in skirmishes with the law over the next year, but 2 others were never heard from again.

City officials plan to reveal the contents of the chest in a public opening soon.
