You probably don’t expect to find whitewater rafting, zip lines, and Olympic training facilities in the middle of Oklahoma City, and yet we have all of that! Located along the Oklahoma River, Riversport Adventure Park turned a stretch of riverfront into one of the most unique outdoor recreation spots in the country.

You can raft through Class IV rapids, kayak the river, climb sky-high adventure courses, surf, zip line across the water, or just watch rowers glide through downtown with the skyline in the background. It’s also part of Oklahoma City’s Olympic and Paralympic training scene, which still feels a little crazy to most people the first time they hear it.

So if you aren’t seeing this from inside of Oklahoma and you were wondering “”WHY OKLAHOMA?”” for the 2028 Olympic Games, this facility is one reason why!

Before it became one of OKC’s trendiest districts, Automobile Alley was exactly what its name suggests. In the early 1900s, this stretch of Broadway was packed with car dealerships, showrooms, and garages as automobiles started transforming American life. At one point, nearly every major car brand had a presence here, turning the district into Oklahoma City’s automotive hub.

Today, many of those historic buildings still stand, but inside you’ll now find coffee shops, restaurants, boutiques, breweries, and some of the coolest local businesses in the city. It’s one of the best examples of old Oklahoma City meeting new Oklahoma City, history with a fresh coat of paint, local shops and a really good latte nearby.

Pro tip: look down while you walk the district. There are small plaques that tell you the history of each building along Broadway.

From the dance floor to the mechanical bull, there’s always something happening here.

Whether you know every line dance or you’re just showing up for the atmosphere, Cowboys has a way of making everyone feel part of the party. It’s loud, lively, a little unpredictable, and completely Oklahoma. Pro tip: Show up early for line dance lessons!

This Memorial Day, we remember and honor the men and women who gave their lives in service to our country.

If you’re looking for meaningful places to visit around Oklahoma City this week, there are several spots that help tell the stories of sacrifice, courage, and service that shaped both Oklahoma and the nation.

•The USS Oklahoma memorial honors the battleship lost during the attack on Pearl Harbor and the Oklahomans who served aboard it.
•Oklahoma Veterans Memorial at the State Capitol
•Gold Star Families Memorial Monument near the Oklahoma State Capitol
•Vietnam Veterans Memorial at Veterans Park
•Korean War Veterans Memorial located near the Capitol complex
•Purple Heart Memorial located on the east side of the 45th Infantry Division Museum
•Founders Plaza at Scissortail Park offers a quieter place downtown to pause and reflect
•And throughout the city, places like Tinker Air Force Base continue Oklahoma City’s long connection to military service and aviation history.

And somthing educational for the future: The 45th Infantry Division Museum is building a BRAND NEW building and opening as the Oklahoma National Guard Museum in June.

If you’ve walked through the Oklahoma City Convention Center at night, you’ve probably noticed the installation glowing above you. It’s called Virtual Sky, and it’s one of the most impressive public art installations in downtown OKC.

Created by artist and architect Susan Narduli, the massive suspended sculpture was designed to capture the feeling of the Oklahoma sky using light, movement, and technology. Thousands of LED lights shift colors and patterns in real time based on actual Oklahoma City weather data. Cloudy skies, changing temperatures, storms rolling in, it's all translated to the artwork.

The installation stretches through the towering glass atriums of the convention center, creating an experience that feels different depending on the time of day, the weather, and where you’re standing. It’s part art installation, part digital sky, and completely unique to Oklahoma City.

Did you know one of Oklahoma City’s shortest streets is also one of its most historic? N. Guernsey Avenue only runs about a block long, but this tiny street has a big claim to fame.

It’s home to what’s believed to be Oklahoma City’s oldest concrete street, originally paved in 1918. More than a century later, parts of that original pavement are still there today. While most people drive by without a second thought, N. Guernsey is a small reminder of how much history can hide in ordinary places.

Before highways and airports connected Oklahoma City to the rest of the country, there was the Santa Fe Train Depot. Built in 1934, this Art Deco landmark became the city’s front door during the golden age of rail travel. But just outside the depot was a very different side of early Oklahoma City…An area known as “Hell’s Half Mile.”

In the city’s early days, this stretch near the railroad tracks was packed with saloons, gambling halls, and rowdy nightlife catering to railroad workers, cowboys, and travelers passing through town.

One of the most legendary figures from that era was Big Ann Wynn, a larger-than-life madam and businesswoman who ran several boarding houses and became one of the best-known women in early Oklahoma City history. Stories about her are still part of local legend today.

The depot may look elegant and polished now, but it once sat beside one of the wildest districts in the city.

That’s Oklahoma City history for you! A little grit, a little glamour, and plenty of stories in between.
