Remains of Missing Hiker Recovered Near Allen Mountain

NEWCOMB, N.Y. — Nearly six months after he vanished in the High Peaks Wilderness, the remains of 22-year-old Canadian hiker Leo DuFour have been recovered near the Allen Mountain trail in Essex County.

DuFour was last seen on November 30, 2024, after setting out for a solo hike in the rugged and remote backcountry. His vehicle, later found snow-covered at the Mount Adams trailhead, sparked a massive multi-agency search effort. In the days that followed, 59 New York State Forest Rangers, along with State Police and other personnel, combed nearly 400 miles of challenging terrain in winter conditions that included whiteouts and sub-zero temperatures.

Despite the exhaustive effort, no trace of DuFour was found during the initial search. As winter deepened, the mission was transitioned from search to recovery, and efforts were paused until the spring thaw made the area more accessible.

On Saturday, May 10, a hiking party reported discovering human remains off the Allen Mountain trail. Forest Rangers, State Police, and a DEC investigator responded to the scene. Items belonging to DuFour were found near the remains, which have been transported to Albany for autopsy and confirmation.

In a statement, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation offered condolences to the DuFour family and praised the persistence of the Forest Rangers who continued the effort through harsh and unforgiving conditions.

DuFour’s disappearance struck a chord with many in the hiking community. Allen Mountain, known for its remote location and difficult terrain, has long challenged even seasoned hikers. His story is a somber reminder of both the power and peril of the Adirondack wilderness.

A lenticular cloud is a lens-shaped cloud formation that typically develops over mountainous areas. These clouds are stationary and form in the troposphere, usually at altitudes where stable moist air flows over a mountain or a mountain range. Lenticular clouds are formed as air is forced to ascend over the terrain, and under certain atmospheric conditions, the air cools and moisture condenses to create these distinctive lens-like cloud formations.

These clouds are often resemble for UFOs due to their saucer-like shape and the fact that they can appear isolated and quite different from other cloud types. Lenticular clouds can be a stunning sight, with multiple layers that create a stacked appearance, and they are commonly seen near peaks of mountains or ranges.
