The Gateway Trailhead reopens in Old Fort just in time for the Old Fort Trails and Trains Festival -2026! Thanks The G5 Trail Collective!

We’re excited to kick off National Trails Day weekend by celebrating the reopening of the Gateway Trailhead in Old Fort!

Hurricane Helene flooded this area, submerging the trailhead, washing out road bridges, and damaging trails. Over the last 18 months, an incredible amount of work has gone into rebuilding and restoring access — including a brand new U.S. Forest Service bridge over Jarrett Creek and 8 miles of new trail accessible from the trailhead.

Join us Friday at 4:30 PM as we gather for the celebration, with an official ribbon cutting and remarks from the U.S. Forest Service, G5 Trail Collective, and community leaders beginning at 5 PM.

Then keep the celebration going at the Trails & Trains Festival in downtown Old Fort. It’s a great weekend to be in Old Fort — we hope to see you there!

Summer in McDowell County, NC stays busy, and that's putting it lightly. From May all the way through August, there's something going on nearly every weekend: live music, festivals, outdoor adventures, and some events you genuinely just have to see to believe (looking at you, Bigfoot Festival!).

A few highlights worth adding to your calendar: the Livermush Festival in downtown Marion on June 6th, Pioneer Day in Old Fort on July 3rd, bluegrass jams at Foothills Watershed every Saturday afternoon, and fireworks on the 4th. There's a lot more where that came from, too!
