Hit the Road Jack

Hit the Road Jack Come along with Mark and Becky as they travel along back roads and lonesome highways seeking out small towns and other forgotten locations.

Hit the Road Jack follows along the excursions of Mark and Becky as they road trip along county roads and dusty trails to visit and document small towns in America before they all vanish. From one horse villages to bustling outlying county seats, visit these unique locations with them as they reveal through photographs and first hand impressions that these towns are far more than just points on a

map. "We are neither photographers nor historians. We roll our eyes along with you at the poor quality of some of our photos and cheer when they miraculously turn out well. We don't apologize for not getting everything correct, these are after all, just our impressions after a 20-30 minute 'tour' of a town. We do, however, welcome comments, opinions and corrections from locals. It makes this page even better when more people contribute."

Hey hey! North Loup!! 😍 🍿

New at FFP: From little North Loup, Nebraska, the Zangger family supplies a surprising amount of the world’s hybrid popcorn seed. It all started with an old peanut butter jar and a challenge.

Once a month I get to take the drive from Omaha to Howells for work. I never tire of the beautiful pastoral and agricultural land on NE Hwy 79.

Rising City, NE. Butler County. Population 347 (2020). We took a brief sojourn off NE Hwy 92 to tour Rising City specifically for our perennial fan Verna Fischer! There are some really lovely homes here, but almost no commerce or even buildings left in the former business district. To our utter heartbreak the school was razed a couple of years ago. Still, we love those tree-lined streets. There were several people out bopping around on their ATVs or taking care of yards and houses.

The original Cozad post photos did not post in an album, so I'm reposting as an album. It makes it easier to find them later. To see the original post with our thoughts and impressions, go to the Hit the Road Jack page and scroll down through the posts. Sorry for any confusion.

Kearney, NE. Buffalo County Seat. Population 34,235. We got out to take a walk through the campus. Mark has memories of his own college days, so walking a campus appeals to him. (I like hanging out with him, so it appeals to me as well. 😊 ) University of Nebraska at Kearney. The Lopers.

Kearney, NE. Buffalo County Seat. Population 34,235 (2020). We saw a lot of different neighborhoods from trailer park, to cozy bungalows, to new suburban construction, to fine historic homes. These houses are from the area around the university. Although we'd probably choose a more urban lifestyle for ourselves, both the location and the homes in this area appeal to us.

Kearney, NE. Buffalo County Seat. Population 34,235 (2020). We toured as much as possible of Kearney as we prepared to head home. It's impossible in a town this size to get everything, or even most things. We got most of The Bricks, other community structures, several homes, and the university campus. It'll be three separate posts. So. Many. Photos. We really like Kearney. It's not at all what we expected. The Bricks is an impressive market area that is pretty and vibrant. School, churches, community services all seem well maintained and supported. The Museum of Nebraska Art is an impressive building, and might inspire another trip to Kearney to visit it. Mark has added Kearney to the list of possibilities for our retirement relocation. 😊
