ALDOT Southwest Region Update: Final steel girders set for Intracoastal Waterway Bridge

This week, the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) and its contractors reached a major milestone on the new Intracoastal Waterway Bridge, between Gulf Shores and Orange Beach. Crews placed the final steel girders across the waterway, marking a big structural and visual step toward completion. The $52 million bridge project remains on track to open by summer 2026.

“This is one of the moments you can see and feel the progress,” said ALDOT Southwest Region spokesperson James Gordon. “The pictures say it all.”

The new bridge, along with the existing Beach Express Bridge, will provide two lanes in each direction, doubling capacity for Beach Express users and increasing the total lanes across the waterway from seven to 10.

Current Progress

– Bridge substructure: 100% complete.
– Steel girders: 100% complete.
– Superstructure work: Crews will now focus on forming and pouring the bridge deck and constructing the barrier rail.
– Roadway work: 90% complete

Connector and Future Projects

Work also continues on the $30 million SR-161 connector and the planned widening of SR-180 from Beaver Creek to the Beach Express Bridge. The SR-161 connector project is scheduled to finish by summer 2026.

Safety and Growth

When finished, the improvements will:
– Reduce congestion on Highway 59 even further.
– Improve emergency access to the island.
– Enhance hurricane evacuation efforts.
– Support local economic development.

Check aldotnews.com for more updates as the bridge moves closer to opening day.

✈️ ➕ Starting Nov. 21, Allegiant will begin a non-stop route between Gulf Shores International Airport (GUF/JKA) and Nashville, Tennessee, via Nashville International Airport (BNA).

According to a news release posted on the airline’s website, one-way fares are as low as $49.

A hallmark of Allegiant’s business model is its network of all non-stop flights. The first six routes to and from GUF began May 21. The airline, the first commercial services in Gulf Shores and Baldwin County, flies between Knoxville, Tennessee; Cincinnati, Ohio; Houston, Texas; Fayetteville, Arkansas; Belleville, Illinois; and Kansas City, Missouri.

Starting in October, Allegiant will expand GUF’s routes to Green Bay, Wisconsin, and Des Moines, Iowa.

Gulf Shores International Airport is exploring the possibility of expanding its terminal following stronger-than-expected passenger traffic from its new partnership with Allegiant Air.

This week, a flight from Gulf Shores to St. Louis carried more than 200 passengers, pushing the total number of travelers since service began in May to nearly 10,000.

“We went from no air service to number three in the state for places you can fly out of here,” Jesse Fosnaugh, the airport’s director, told WKRG in Mobile. “That alone is incredible.”
