Nachusa Grasslands, located less than 20 miles from The Cabins, is a 4,100-acre restored tallgrass prairie managed by The Nature Conservancy. This vibrant landscape offers a variety of activities for nature enthusiasts and families alike.
🌾 Hiking and Exploration
Visitors can explore several hiking areas, including Clear Creek Knolls, Stone Barn Savanna, and Thelma Carpenter Prairie. These areas feature mowed paths and off-trail opportunities through prairies, oak savannas, and wetlands. Highlights include creek crossings, sandstone cliffs, and diverse plant life. The preserve is open from dawn to dusk, and hikers are encouraged to wear long pants and sturdy shoes.
🦬 Bison Viewing
Nachusa is home to a conservation herd of American bison, reintroduced in 2014. The bison roam a 1,500-acre fenced area and can often be seen from public roads such as Stone Barn Road, Flagg Road, and Lowden Road. Binoculars are recommended for the best viewing experience.
🐦 Birdwatching and Wildlife
The grasslands support over 180 bird species, including grasshopper sparrows and dickcissels, as well as various mammals, reptiles, and amphibians. The diverse habitats make it a prime location for wildlife observation and photography.
🏛️ Visitor Center
The Visitor Center at 2075 Lowden Road features interpretive exhibits and offers panoramic views of the prairie. Facilities include a pavilion, potable water, and restrooms. From here, guests can embark on self-guided tours or join scheduled guided hikes.

Nachusa hosts events like "Autumn on the Prairie," featuring guided hikes, bison tours, and educational activities. Guided hikes led by staff and volunteers provide insights into prairie restoration and local ecology.
