From war-torn Yugoslavia to building a new life in America — Mat’s story is pure resilience. His family escaped conflict, lived in Germany, and won the immigration lottery in 1999, opening Spring Valley Restaurant & Drive Thru in the City of Oregon, Illinois that same year.

Mat was just six when he arrived, not knowing a word of English. He grew up in the restaurant, later played professional soccer, then took over the family business in 2019. When the pandemic hit, he didn’t quit — he cut out a takeout window in the restaurant, launched Broaster Fried Chicken with his famous “Slap Sauce,” and kept the doors open and serving the community.

Today, Mat runs the restaurant with his family still involved, serving scratch-made food with heart. Favorites such as the Cinnamon Slammer Sandwich, skillets, barbecue and smoked meats draw locals and travelers in. More than just great food, Spring Valley is a community hub — a place for conversations, ideas, and connection.

All Trails Lead to Oregon IL — and many of them lead right to Mat’s table. Stop in, grab a meal, and experience the story for yourself at Spring Valley Family Restaurant right here in Oregon, Illinois.
