Make sure to be prepared if you are venturing out on your own. Maps, GPS, and letting people know your plans are all wise if it is your first time on a trail.

Signage in our parks is not always amazing, so be safe, and be aware trails might not be clearly marked.

If you do get lost, hopefully you told someone your plans. Stop, breathe, do not go further if you are truly lost.

Reach out if you would like advice for learning more about being safe on long trails or wilderness safety in general! Be safe out there everyone!

Sequoia sempervirens is a spectacular life form. I feel being such an ancient organism, the way they live their lives is far too odd for our little human brains to fully comprehend. Helps to put us in our place realizing the scale of time, size, and strangeness of these ancient ecosystems.

Sometimes the coolest things in the redwoods are the ones you have to slow down to notice.

Flip over the frond of a western sword fern and you'll find these little dots underneath. They're called sori, and they contain the structures that produce the fern's spores.

Ferns have been around for more than 300 million years, long before flowering plants evolved. No flowers. No seeds. Just spores, moisture, and a reproductive strategy that has been working for an almost unimaginable amount of time.

It's easy to spend your whole time in the redwoods looking up at the giants. But some of my favorite things to show people are right at our feet.

Slow down. Look closer. There's an entire ancient world hiding in the little things.

Prescribed burn at Prairie Creek. Fire can be scary, but an important part of our ecosystems. A better understanding of fire and fire management can really help our forests as well as communities.

This broke my heart, and is tough to share, but worth the read.
We must respect our wildlife, and though it can seem so cute, fun, and helpful to offer food to wild animals, it is never a responsible decision.

Due to human ignorance, this poor bear had to be euthanized for human safety.

Although feeding a Raven or Gull might not seem as harmful, conditioninig intelligent animals to human food can not just be dangerous for human beings, but extremely harmful for the threatened and endangered species in our parks, not to mention bad for the animals directly being fed with generally poor quality low nutrient human snack food.
