This is what Florida used to sell — and it was real. 🌿

Silver Springs was drawing tourists before Disney existed. By the 1950s, the glass-bottom boats at Silver Springs were one of the most visited attractions in the entire United States, welcoming over a million visitors a year to peer through the hull at one of the clearest freshwater springs on earth.

A ride cost 50 cents. The water was so clear you could read a newspaper through 30 feet of it.

Then came the theme parks, the development, and the water withdrawals. By the 1980s, the spring's flow had dropped dramatically. By the 2000s, algae blooms had turned that legendary clarity into a murky green haze. The state eventually took over the property in 2013 after the private operators walked away.

The boats still run. But the water they float on is not the same water your grandparents saw.
