🦀💙 A little crab, a closer look, and a whole lot of curiosity!

One of our favorite things about exploring wild Florida is discovering all the incredible creatures that call these coastal waters home! 🌿🌊

Our guide spotted this little crab and carefully scooped him into our portable aquarium, giving our guests an opportunity to get a closer look without handling him or causing unnecessary stress. 🙌🏼

These little encounters are some of our favorite opportunities to turn curiosity into conservation! By taking a moment to observe, learn, and appreciate the wildlife around us, we can help inspire the next generation of stewards for our waterways.

And of course, after our little meet and greet, our crabby friend was gently returned right where we found him to go about his day! 🦀💙

What the shell is this 👀

This is 450 million years of evolutionary perfection! That’s what this is!

Meet the horseshoe crab 🦀

(Who actually isn’t a crab at all but more closely related to spiders + scorpions 🦂)

While we always practice passive observation it should be noted if you see one of these guys hung up in some mangrove roots you can gently pick them up by placing your fingers on either side of the shell at the widest point and picking them up to return them legs down into the water 💧

And don’t be afraid of their long tail, called a teslon, that is often mistaken for a stinger 🐝

That handy tail is actually a little tool to help them right themselves if they flip over. They don’t use it a defense tool and are completely harmless 💙

Spotting a manatee on a Get Up and Go Kayaking Sarasota clear kayak eco tour is always special ✨

These gentle, slowing moving marine mammals are herbivores that spend most of their day grazing on seagrass and aquatic plants, sometimes eating up to 10% of their body weight daily. When they need to come up to breathe every few minutes, you’ll often see a swirl or a gentle rise before they surface.

They’re protected and sensitive to disturbance, so we keep our distance, stay quiet, and let them move freely. Floating in a clear kayak lets you observe without getting in the way which is exactly how these moments are meant to happen. 🌊🚣‍♀️✨
