You never know what kind of fun critters you will find at the sandbar. Check out that giant red hermit crab! Also, I get asked a lot about those pink bellies you see on dolphins this time of year. Well the answer is,
Why it happens: Dolphins are warm-blooded and generate a lot of metabolic heat, but unlike land mammals they can't sweat or pant to cool off. Instead, they dump excess heat by shunting blood to the surface of their bodies — especially thin-skinned areas with dense blood vessel networks, like the belly, flippers, and dorsal fin — where the heat radiates out into the surrounding water. This redirection of blood flow to their periphery is what sometimes makes the bellies of active dolphins appear pink in the summer. Sarasotadolphin
