The #1 Question I Get Asked most often. “When is the best time to be here?”
After 30 years running charters on Lake Ontario, here’s my straight-up answer:
The King Salmon fishery is NOT the same as it was 10, 20, or 30 years ago.
Genetics, pen-rearing, warmer water, and changing weather patterns have completely flipped the script.
• August can be one of toughest months now for Kings.
• Old-school “peak season” mid-Aug to mid-Sept? Rarely lives up to the hype anymore.
• Average king size? Noticeably smaller than it used to be.
• Fall weather? More unstable than ever with early hurricanes spinning up the coast and blowing the bite out for days (or weeks).
SPRING through EARLY SUMMER – hands down the best and most consistent action we see all year.
Why YOU should be booking April–July trips right now:
- Fish are closer to shore – 5–20 minutes from the dock and lines are in
- Shorter runs = calmer water = happier kids, wives, and first-timers
- Higher catch-and-land ratio (fall kings fight dirty and we miss a lot more)
- More fish in the box, bigger smiles in the pictures
If you’ve been holding out for that “classic” late-summer king bite like the old days… it’s just not as reliable as in the past. We still get epic fall days when everything lines up, but if you want the trip you’ll be bragging about all winter, fish with us when the lake is ON FIRE – and that’s spring and early summer.
2026 dates are already moving fast (especially weekends and brown trout in April).
