Photo sessions at The Sanctuary.

A family recently did a maternity photo shoot at the house and shared this afterward:

“We had the best time at your place. Absolutely stunning! Every room felt like an adventure. Gorgeous beyond gorgeous.”

I’m grateful they were willing to share their experience.

If anyone is looking for a unique space for maternity, family, or creative photo shoots, feel free to reach out. There’s no charge — it’s just nice seeing the house become part of someone’s story.

The energy, kindness, and connection shared within these walls have left a lasting imprint and we’re deeply grateful. Thanks so much for following us.

Picked up this gorgeous arrangement from Town & Country today. I took this antique vase and a photo of the mural to them and asked for something dark and moody to match the space. I think they nailed it! Thank you for creating something so beautiful.

Every good Victorian house needs a watchful spirit — meet Olive, our newest addition.

Dressed in a traditional black cloak and an antique-style plague doctor mask, Olive feels right at home in The Sanctuary.

Origins

The plague doctor mask dates back to the 17th century, when Europe was ravaged by recurring outbreaks of the bubonic plague. The distinctive beak-shaped mask became iconic in the 1600s, especially after being popularized by Charles de Lorme, a French physician to several royal families.

⚕️ Purpose

The beak wasn’t just for appearance — it served a very real (if misguided) medical function.

* The beak was stuffed with herbs, flowers, vinegar-soaked sponges, or spices — things like lavender, mint, camphor, and cloves.

* At the time, doctors believed disease spread through “miasma,” or bad air. The scented herbs were thought to filter and purify what they breathed.

* The goggles protected their eyes, and the long leather coat, gloves, and stick were meant to prevent direct contact with the sick.

🖤 Symbolism & Modern Resonance

Today, the plague doctor mask has taken on a more mythic and gothic aura — it represents mystery, mortality, and the thin line between healer and harbinger.
It’s often used in:

* Steampunk or dark-Victorian decor (which makes it perfect for The Sanctuary’s vibe).

* Carnival of Venice costumes (as “Medico della Peste”).

* Symbolic art and Halloween aesthetics — as both protector and omen.
