The Oregon coast has long been a popular destination for surfing enthusiasts worldwide. But there’s often a lack of diversity among those visiting these surfing enclaves, which tend to be situated in and around Indigenous lands and coastlines. That’s why professional surfer Kelly Potts decided to take action by offering free surfing retreats exclusively for tribal members.

Each summer Kelly travels up and down the West Coast partnering with local tribes to facilitate the retreats. According to Siletz Tribal member Kimberly Lane the retreats have been very rewarding for members of her community. “Oregon is Indian Country,” Lane says. “This is part of our original reservation. And so it’s full circle for us in terms of healing and empowerment and getting opportunities we don’t normally get.”

Last August Kelly and the Siletz welcomed the Oregon Field Guide crew to one of their surfing retreats where Kelly hosted four girls who were beginner to novice-level surfers. We watched as they went from struggling to mount their boards early on, to catching multiple waves by day’s end. But most importantly, there was a sense of joy and connectedness that was palpable amongst the group.

Kelly hopes to facilitate this sense of community with each of her surfing retreats.
