One week out. SecKC is back at Knuckleheads Garage next Tuesday, September 8, doors at 5:00 PM and talks at 6:00. Same address as always: 701 North Montgall Avenue, Kansas City, MO 64120.

If you have been on the fence, this is the month to show up. Gerald Combs, the person who created Wireshark, is here to talk about how Kansas City shaped it. He started the whole thing at UMKC in 1998, so this is a real piece of KC tech history told by the guy who lived it. Before that, gets into "My Network Has Commitment Issues," pointing AI at VPC flow logs and telemetry so you can actually make sense of what your network is doing. has Open Source News, and closes us out on the beats.

Thanks to the sponsors keeping it free: Torq (Gold), LMG Security (Silver), Neovera (Silver), and Axonius (Silver).

A few reminders: the bar at Knuckleheads is cash only (there is an ATM onsite, and food takes card), bring your ID, and heads up that the venue sits right by the train tracks, so give yourself a couple extra minutes in case one has you stuck. Full write-up here:

We want every single person reading this there with us. You will need to be able to get into the conference area, which typically requires a DEFCON badge. How you get one or get past the goons is completely up to you.

Tomorrow, Bill Swearingen, a founder of SecKC, takes the stage at Black Hat USA. His talk, “Could a Pattern on Your Clothing Fool Facial Recognition?”, covers 61 different adversarial patterns tested against 10 facial recognition models, all of them printable on ordinary clothing. It is a talk about privacy, surveillance, and how something as simple as fabric can challenge the systems watching us every day.

If you are at Black Hat, this is one to catch. Thursday, August 6, 11:05am, Oceanside B, Level 2. Come support one of our own!

SecDSM isn't a vendor, they're our people. SecDSM runs the same kind of free, volunteer-driven monthly security meetup in Des Moines that SecKC runs here in Kansas City, and they crossed state lines to back us as a Title Sponsor of the KC Cybersecurity Community Expo (Cyber Yappy Hour).

That kind of community-to-community support is rare, and we're not taking it for granted. Come meet the SecDSM crew on Tuesday, August 11 from 5 to 9 PM at Knuckleheads. Free to attend, no ticket required.

Hometown pride: Onspring, the GRC software company headquartered right here in Overland Park, is a Title Sponsor of the KC Cybersecurity Community Expo (Cyber Yappy Hour).

Having a local company invest at this level says a lot about how much they value the KC security community they're part of every day. Come thank the Onspring team in person on Tuesday, August 11 from 5 to 9 PM at Knuckleheads. Free to attend, no ticket required.
