AIRLINES INCREASE THE COST OF CHECKED BAGS
Earlier this week United, Delta & JetBlue raised the cost of their checked bags. American and Southwest just joined in. Here is what you need to know.

Southwest, which only began charging for checked bags last May, implemented their first bag fee hike on Thursday. With the new $10 increase your first checked bag will now cost $45 and a second checked bags will cost $55.

American joined the movement but with a few wrinkles. Budget conscious travelers who book Basic Economy will pay a higher fee than other fares.

American increased its checked bag fee for flights booked beginning April 9 by $10, now $50 for the first checked bag, and now $60 for the second bag. Passengers who prepay online or on the American app will get a $5 discount per bag.

Basic Economy flyers will pay an additional $5 fee for flights booked on May 18 or later.

Additionally on May 18, AA will take away the option that flyers with AAdvantage loyalty status currently have for free Basic Economy seat assignments and to receive upgrades while traveling on a Basic Economy fare.

The alleged culprit for the move is the fact that Jet Fuel rose from $2.50 on the eve of the Iran war to the price of $4.16 per gallon on April 8.
