Happy World Oceans Day! Today, we celebrate the ocean that inspires us, connects us and sustains us. 💙 From the vibrant tide pools at Point Pinos to the protected water of Monterey Bay, our ocean is alive with beauty and biodiversity!

World Oceans Day is a reminder that protecting our oceans starts with everyday actions, reducing pollution, conserving resources, and caring for the coastal environments we all share!

Together, we can help preserve the health and beauty of our oceans for future generations. Whether you're enjoying a walk along the shore, participating in a beach cleanup, or simply taking a moment to appreciate the sea, every action makes a difference.

Let's work together to keep our oceans clean, healthy, and thriving. 💙 Looking for ways to help protect our ocean? Every action counts! Here are a few simple steps you can take today!

👉Join a coastal cleanup – Help keep our beaches and parks clean! Check out www.cityofpg.org/calendar for upcoming events.
👉Pack it in, pack it out – Always take your trash with you after a beach day or picnic.
👉Keep storm drains clean – Never dump anything down the storm drain!
👉Respect marine life – Observe from a distance, avoid loud noises, and never touch or disturb wildlife. Follow all posted signs.
👉Cut down on plastic – Say no to single-use plastics. Choose reusable bags, bottles, and containers whenever you can.

Beach access at Lovers Point remains temporarily closed and is expected to remain closed for approximately the next 24 hours while the situation is assessed and monitored.

On June 3, Pacific Grove Police were notified of a deceased whale floating near the shoreline. Out of an abundance of caution, the beach was closed due to the potential for marine mammal carcasses to attract sharks, including larger predatory species.

We appreciate the public's patience and cooperation as we continue to monitor the area and prioritize public safety.

A coordinated response is currently underway following the stranding of a deceased humpback whale on a sensitive Monterey Bay area beach. The response is being led by the Marine Mammal Stranding Networks at UC Santa Cruz's Long Marine Laboratory and Moss Landing Marine Laboratories, working in partnership with the City of Pacific Grove, Stanford University's Hopkins Marine Station, NOAA Fisheries, and other local partners.

Whale strandings are a natural occurrence and provide important opportunities for scientists to learn more about the health, ecology, and threats facing marine mammal populations. When they occur, response teams work to gather information while ensuring public safety and minimizing disturbance to surrounding wildlife and habitats.

Given the ecological sensitivity of the stranding location, which serves as important habitat for harbor seals and nursing harbor seal pups, response efforts have been carefully designed to minimize impacts to wildlife and the surrounding environment.

Over the next 24 hours, trained responders will conduct a limited necropsy examination to collect biological samples. These samples may help better understand potential contributors to the cause of death, though a limited necropsy means a cause of death may remain uncertain. Samples collected will contribute valuable information to ongoing marine mammal health and conservation research. To reduce impacts to the beach ecosystem and nearby wildlife, the whale will remain largely intact and will be removed from the beach via towing following sample collection.

The public is asked to observe from a distance and avoid approaching the whale or entering sensitive wildlife areas. Human presence near harbor seal pupping habitat can cause unnecessary stress and disturbance to animals during a critical period of their life cycle. Giving responders space to work will also help ensure safe and efficient operations.

We appreciate the public's cooperation as responders work to responsibly manage this stranding, protect sensitive coastal habitats, and gather information that will help advance our understanding of marine mammal health.
