The Red Cedar Inn is a museum and visitor center on the historic Route 66! There is also a Community Events calendar on the City of Pacific's website.

There is always something going on, and here is a great place to learn about upcoming events you will not want to miss out on. Did you know Off The Rails Burger Bar in Pacific was once a confectionary?

In the 1900’s, Frederick Jacob Mayle operated a confectionary at 100 East St. Louis Street in Pacific. At the store, customers could purchase groceries, candy, ice cream and other refreshments. Other goods sold were chocolate candy, chewing to***co, candles and even scenic postcards of Pacific. There was also an ice cream parlor, lunch counter, and soda fountain which were a popular gathering place for locals.

Fred Mayle and his wife Louisa were longtime residents of town and were very active in their community. Fred was also known for giving children free ice cream on special occasions and welcoming Santa Claus to the store during the Christmas season. Their son Clarence was also active in the community, owning and operating the C. J. Mayle Garage at 122 North First Street and serving as the town’s mayor.

In 1920, Fred Mayle sold the confectionary to Verne and Ralph Smith. The business subsequently became Smith’s Confectionary, which remained at the location for decades. In 1921, the Smiths added a second floor with booths and a dance floor, complete with an electric piano. Ice cream sodas and sundaes were still served from the first-floor parlor and the building continued to be an important gathering place for generations of Pacific residents.

In recent years, the building served as a museum for a local model train club. During the Summer of 2024, John Reese opened Off The Rails Burger Bar on the first floor where the original confectionary once stood. The small restaurant is known for its delicious burgers served with locally sourced beef and its trackside patio.

Construction of Zitzman Elementary, Summer 1965

Opening in 1965 as Pacific Elementary School, it was later renamed in honor of Elda Zitzman, a longtime educator who taught in the Meramec Valley for over forty years and was the district's first female principal, when she retired in 1969.

Today, the school continues to serve generations of local children and remains part of the Meramec Valley R-III School District - Home of the Indians.

The City of Pacific and the Pacific Area Chamber of Commerce have teamed up to bring you TWO DAYS of fall fun, fantastic food, live entertainment, shopping, and activities for the whole family!

Evolution of LeSaulnier Building in Pacific, 1900's, 1970's, 2020's

For many years, Joseph LeSaulnier, a combat veteran of the Civil War from Germany, operated a drugstore in the community and was known for being a quiet and unassuming man. He was also known his kindness, never turning away a sick person.

Later, Joseph was joined in the business by his son, Dr. Edward Baumhoff LeSaulnier, continuing the family tradition of serving Pacific as local druggists. Their store, located at 135 West St. Louis Street, was more than simply a place to purchase medicine. Like many small-town drugstores of the era, it was an key part of the community, where residents could have prescriptions filled while shopping at the stores downtown or talking with neighbors.

The LeSaulnier's were part of Pacific's community during a period when the town was growing rapidly from the railroad and commercial activity. Their drugstore remained a familiar downtown business and represents the important role that locally owned pharmacies once played in Missouri's small towns.

Today, the LeSaulnier Building is a private residence.

🏎️ LOOK AT WHO CRUISED INTO PACIFIC TODAY! 🏎️

We were thrilled to welcome the LookingGlass Corvette Club from O'Fallon, Illinois, to the historic Red Cedar Inn today!

One of the club's leaders stopped by earlier this month and enjoyed her visit so much that she decided Red Cedar Inn needed to be a stop on their upcoming road trip! And of course, we were more than happy to open our doors a little early to welcome this wonderful group!

We absolutely LOVE when car clubs and groups make Pacific part of their adventures! It's a chance for us to share the history of Red Cedar Inn, Route 66, and all the wonderful things our community has to offer.

One of the best parts of today's visit? Hearing several club members tell us they plan to COME BACK to spend even more time exploring Pacific! That's exactly what we love to hear!
A HUGE thank you to the LookingGlass Corvette Club for choosing Pacific as one of your stops today! We truly enjoyed meeting everyone, admiring those beautiful Corvettes, and sharing a little of our town's history with you.

Miller's Sandwich Shop in Pacific, 1964 and 2023

Located across from Pacific Plaza was Miller’s Sandwich Shop at 428 East Osage Street. Owned by Jerry Miller, the unique rock building was constructed as a service station soon after the arrival of Route 66 in 1932. After Interstate 44 opened in 1962, contractor Emerson M. Bittick of Bittick Construction Company renovated the space into the popular eatery.

After a three month renovation, Miller’s officially opened on October 28, 1964. It featured a spacious kitchen, serving window, and a small dining room. There was also a neon ice cream cone on the roof. Today, the building is home to Dennis S. Oliver - American Family Insurance Agent - Pacific, MO.

We are working hard to create an amazing weekend for our community and for all the guests who choose to spend their weekend with us in Pacific — and we can’t do it without volunteers!

Ever wonder what Pacific’s Sand Mountain looked like before Route 66?

Before Route 66 cut through the front of Sand Mountain in 1932, the huge bluff served as a popular vantage point overlooking Downtown Pacific and a place to advertise local businesses, including the Tavern Rock Sand Company. At the foot of the bluff was a large open pit used by local quarries and as a trash dump.

Today, travelers can still view Sand Mountain from the side at ADAM’s Garden or from the top at Blackburn Park. An annual tradition during the holiday season is the installation of a nativity scene and Christmas Tree at the bluff. The former pit has since been filled in, and the site is now home to St. Bridget Catholic School.

Postcards of Downtown Pacific, 1900’s

A century ago, Pacific was a booming railroad town with hotels, general stores, bakeries, banks, and several churches. Area landmarks at that time were Leber's Hall, Opera House of Pacific, Phelan's Bluff, and the Meramec River. The main road through town was Franklin Road, which connected Allenton to Pacific in the days before Route 66 arrived in 1932. Enjoy this trip through the past of our beautiful town!
