UPDATE: The Wonderland Trail (Narada Falls to Stevens Canyon Rd) is now open. The park can confirm that on May 20, a ranger collided with a black bear on the trail during a foot patrol from Narada Falls to Reflection Lakes. The ranger was unharmed, and the bear did not display aggressive behavior. The encounter appears to have been inadvertent. Out of an abundance of caution, staff swept the area for additional hikers, and the park had temporarily closed the section of the Wonderland Trail between Narada Falls and Stevens Canyon Road while staff monitor bear activity in the area.

Encounters between wildlife and humans can occur in the park, particularly during periods of increased wildlife activity in spring. The park reminds visitors to remain alert, maintain appropriate distance from wildlife, hike in groups when possible, and follow park guidance for wildlife safety. Tips for observing wildlife safely can be found on the park website: https://go.nps.gov/MountRainierWildlifeSafety

Just a short drive from Packwood,
Packwood Lake Trail is a local favorite!

With about 8- 10 miles roundtrip and 1,200 feet of elevation gain, this trail leads you through old-growth forest, mountain views, and one of the most beautiful alpine lakes in the area.
Would you hike it?

Friday, May 22nd!

Hey, SR 410 Chinook Pass/SR 123 Cayuse Pass enthusiasts! You’ve been asking (and asking and asking), and here it is: Both roads through Mount Rainier National Park will reopen for the season by 8 a.m. Friday, May 22, in time for Memorial Day weekend!

Both passes close each winter due to snow levels and avalanche danger and reopen in the spring after snow is cleared. Our maintenance crews have finished clearing both highways, and the National Park Service is in the final phases of clearing Stevens Canyon Road and Sunrise Park Road.

As a reminder, all commercial vehicles are prohibited from traveling through Mount Rainier National Park, which includes sections of SR 123 and SR 410.
