☔️ Meet Char.

Char has never lived in one place for long. She grew up moving between Texas and Oklahoma with the wheat harvest and the oil wells, then kept moving for years afterward, following the military and different adventures. California was the longest stop, eleven years, until she saw an advertisement for Paducah’s Artist Relocation Program and decided to try somewhere new one more time. This time, she stayed.

She arrived in 2005, before her Lower Town studio, Pinecone Gallery, was ready. On opening night, the sirens sounded and a tornado moved through town. Who could forget an opening like that?

“Oh my gosh, it was an exciting opening,” Char said. “The Chamber was here and cut the ribbon. It was really the first time I’ve experienced anything like that.”

Tornado aside, what struck her most in those early days was how people treated her. In every other city she had lived in, being new meant being regularly reminded of it by people who wanted her to know she wasn’t a local. In Paducah, strangers stopped her on the street just to say they were glad she’d come. That kind of welcome, offered without hesitation, made staying an easy decision.

👀 We’ve been working on something: Paducah is featured in National Geographic’s “Small Towns USA!” The Visitors Bureau hosted writer Brenna Darling as part of our earned media strategy, and our local partners blew her away with their hospitality and creative spirit. Look for the book at major retailers nationwide.

“Paducah is sustaining culture, identity, and traditions, with art serving as a gateway to deeper connections around the world,” said Darling. “I’m excited for the world to discover and celebrate Paducah, and fall in love with it as I did during my stay.”
