Coal and peaches built Palisade. In 1885, John Nichols opened the Cameo mine. Then in the late 1890s, George Smith opened the Mt. Lincoln, Garfield, and Farmer's Union Mines. ⛏️ Though the last of Palisade's dozen coal mines closed over time, orchards and eventually w**e took root.
